Day 64. 85km (86729kms 8yrs)

Very sad to be leaving quirky little Andorra so soon. Especially now that the sun is out! But with accommodation locked in at a Barcelona hostel it was time to go.

But first; though my dodgy brake had held up very well for a couple of weeks – I’d monitored it closely – on climbing the Pyranees all the fluid drained straight out again, perhaps due to the change in pressure in the mountains. So I dropped into Couloir bikeshop in La Massana, where the mechanic sawed off the old shimano calliper replacing it with a new removable model. I had two fully functional brakes again! The whole thing took only half an hour and on hearing about my adventure the owner gave me a very good rate.

After which I zoomed down the hill back through Andorra La Vella to immigration where once more no checks took place as I returned to Schengen Europe, and into Spain for my first time by bike. First time at all really if you don’t count beach resort holidays as a youngster.

10kms later in the town of La Seu d’Urgell I stocked up in readiness for Good Friday the following day. Cathedral de Santa Maria appeared closed but was still a nice backdrop for my first Spanish pastry.

Continuing downhill wasn’t as easy as I’d anticipated; a strong headwind blew up the valley making me frustrated at the amount of pedalling required to descend. At last I switched valleys, heading now to the east I got a brake from the wind. Down a forest trail off a dirt track off the main road I found a nice spot to camp a full hour before sunset. Except for bread, my dinner was still all French; plenty of time for Spanish food in the coming couple of weeks.
