Day 56. 98km (86306kms 8yrs)

It had been cold overnight; the tent, the long grass, the grape vines, everything was under a heavy dew. The hazy sun was insufficient to dry things so I packed away a wet tent resolving to maybe air it out during the day.

After a couple of small climbs I arrived at the village of Le Réole on the Canal Du Midi which would connect me with Toulouse 200km away. So for the 80 remaining kilometres that day I rode beside the canal on a solid track, sometimes a bit bumpy with tree roots, but otherwise of excellent quality. The towpath was busy with families of cyclists, MAMILs, and biketourers, the latter mostly in pairs. On the water a couple of kayakers and pleasure boats, but all the canal boats I saw were moored up.

Luckily I’d started the day with a bit of food in my panniers as any supermarket or bakery shopping would require a diversion into a town. Instead I enjoyed sunny picnics from the pannier beside the locks. I dried my socks and shoes (but not the tent) in the sun and contemplated how nice it is to not have a proper job.

I arrived into Agen then, tired but early so got my internet stuff done before proceeding to host Thomas and Adéle’s place. Something about my appearance horrified their baby into quite a fit but she calmed down rather after I’d had a shower 😆

  1. Wow! That tree-lined canal was a sight to behold. I don't think the surface of the UK canal tow paths can offer such a smooth and pleasant ride as the one you have ridden. What a delight.

  2. Beauté incroyable!!! You have traveled through some beautiful spots but this by far has to be number 1! Wow!!! Rural France is very picturesque. ❤️

  3. I have to say, the canal towpaths in France are top notch .
I cycle ours , and condition of some of them leaves alot to be desired.
Lovely leg of of journey, smelly cheese included 😂👍🥖🧀

  4. Love the blooming rape fields. I cycled that area last summer. Canal du Midi can get quite crowded during holidays. The bicycle route V81 is a really nice alternative. From there I made several side trips into the Pyrenees. And: its a little cooler up there in the hot season.

  5. An absolute green corridor! Just back today from 5 days of touring round Nederlands with friends – bikes, cheese and beer 👍👍👍

  6. I tried to cycle that canal a few years ago but discovered I was really allergic to Plane tree pollen. First time I've ever had hay fever. I was miserable.

  7. Happy Days , cycled along there a few times , I,m sure by now you have reached Carcassonne along the Canal De Midi from Toulouse , along the new gravelled section. !!! a big improvement from what it used to be, ride safe Paul.
