Day 44. 74km (85537kms 8yrs)
Jean – a bike mechanic – toon a look at my brake calliper as I ate breakfast. He topped up the brake fluid and advised me to leave it a couple of days to see what happens. A cosy bed, a hot meal AND bike maintenance?! This is Warm Showers Premium!
So my good mood was not even spoiled when it began to drizzle and then rain as I rode the 20 or so easy kilometres to Lorient. Here – thanks to host Yannick – I had the schedule for the ferries across the Blevet river mouth. Elsewhere I’d had to go around as boats were seasonal, but in Lorient the ferries are part of the public transport network so are year-round and accept bikes. In fact I was one of three cyclists on the 12 minute trip.
On the Port Louis side of the harbour the weather was better! 30 flat kilometres later by the outskirts of Carnac the sun was coming out. On my way to the visitors’ centre I passed by a field of large standing stones, their lines disappearing into the foggy distance.
After taking a break and watching a movie at the visitors centre I emerged into sunshine! Opposite is the largest of the menhir fields; the Alignements du Ménec comprises 1099 stones, in lines, dating back 6000 years (pre stone henge!) Together these fields make up the largest collection of Menhirs in the world; over a space of about 5kms I climbed up 5000yr old tumulus, and visited inside the nearly 6000yr old Tumulus de Kercado, all the while cycling paths between and around fields of ancient stones.
All this brought me slowly in the direction of Warm Showers host Geneviève whose offer of a simple meal turned out to encompass an aperitif followed by a four course dinner!

What an interesting place you toured. I had never heard of the Carnac Stones so of course I had to do a little research. Fascinating! This is another destination for Hubby and I to visit. I have added it to our list. 🫶🏼 Continued safe travels. Sorry you’re still having issues with that brake. 😔
By amazing coincidence, Carnac is the brand name of Planet X's bike apparel and gear. Unfortunately, I don't think they can help with that leaking brake though😢
Ey up , as a proud lancastrian, a warm welcome.
Where a Yorkshire man says How much ??
😂😂
So much history in France. Pretty amazing.
That was an intersting day & decent weather too.
I visited the Carnac stones on family holiday in 2016 and was astonished to get there and realise I recognised the place. My parents then told me I'd visited when I was 4 or 5 years old. What a great place it is
