I took a tour of Osaka, Japan, to get my first impression of the city—but things quickly took an unexpected turn. After exploring the lively streets, I found myself walking alone through what’s known as Yakuza territory in the middle of the night. From the neon-lit districts to the darker, quieter alleys, this solo adventure revealed a side of Osaka I never expected.
Is Osaka really dangerous? Or is its reputation overhyped? Watch as I share my raw experience of walking through one of the city’s most notorious areas after dark.
Osaka is a large port city and commercial center on the Japanese island of Honshu. It’s known for its modern architecture, nightlife and hearty street food. The 16th-century shogunate Osaka Castle, which has undergone several restorations, is its main historical landmark. It’s surrounded by a moat and park with plum, peach and cherry-blossom trees. Sumiyoshi-taisha is among Japan’s oldest Shinto shrines.

Filming videos in commercial or residential areas in Japan without permission and posting them on YouTube or other sites may, in some cases, be not only a breach of etiquette but also a violation of the law.
Your streetwalking videos may raise issues such as portrait rights and privacy rights.
In Japan, although there are no strict rules clearly defined by law regarding filming in public places, society places a high value on privacy.
You need to think carefully about Japanese customs and laws before filming and posting videos.
