ℹ A Class 66, operated by Freightliner, leads an intermodal freight train towards Doncaster. Elmswell station is adjacent and is served by the Ipswich to Cambridge services. It was a good half-hour’s ride here from the previous crossing on Wassicks Lane, and my bike’s back tyre suddenly ruptured whilst I was on the approaches to this crossing – it was the best time to have done it, though, because that was the last bit of cycling for the day. Trains seemed to be having problems in the Bury St. Edmund’s area as well at the time and I nearly got stuck at this station for a while, but thankfully a train to Ipswich showed up before too long. This crossing’s red lights seem to malfunction, partially staying on between flashes. Or is that just me being crazy? That ‘DHL’ van also got in the way and wouldn’t turn off their engine (which prompted the unnecessary comment “delivery vans are the worst!”). Ironically, the parked, idling van obscures a sign instructing people to switch their engines off…
