Day 41. 57km (85340kms 8yrs)

Well rested, with a dry tent and clean clothes I began the shortish ride to Anne’s fisherman’s cottage; she’d given me the key over breakfast when I’d stayed at Frédéric’s place.

It was another grey day, but it wasn’t raining, and though I’d turned a corner, remarkably the gentle breeze was still at my back! Dropping first down to (closed) fort Bertheaume I followed the coast around parc naturel marin d’iroise to Petit Minou lighthouse; also closed, but still a popular visit on its little promontory.

I’d been warned to have low expectations of Brest, but it was even blander and sadder than I’d expected. Besides Tour Tanguy and the fort (both closed) on either side of the harbour its an entirely post war city. Perhaps if I’d investigated further than the waterfront I would’ve found some redeeming features, but what I saw did not draw me in. Instead I stopped only at a bakery at the edge of a comparatively small beach for a slice of very nice goats cheese pizza before leaving town.

I passed through a couple of cute little villages before arriving chez Anne just outside of L’hôpital Camfrout. What a charming little cottage I’d been leant for the night! And what luxury to drink my wine from a glass, eat my cheese and bread from a plate, and edit my day’s vlog from the comfort of a couch.

  1. That little apartment looks wonderful. Especially imagining how it feels after a day of cycling. – You‘re right about Brest. We‘ve been there twice, and I can’t think of anything that would entice me to go back. Actually, I can’t recall what in the world made us go there the second time.

  2. I really hope you get some sun while cycling along the voast of Brittany. It males such a wonderful difference. Fingers crossed! Shame about Brest, it gor all destroyed during rhe war. But Quimper anf the ville close in Concarneau are lovely, if you go through those. Yay to private vottages! 🤗
