Hockley Viaduct Cycle Path NCN26 To Winchester via St Catherine’s Hill and the Handlebar Cafe.

The Hockley Viaduct was constructed in 1890 by the London & South Western Railway (L&SWR), led by its Chief Engineer, W. L. Galbraith. Originally known as the Twyford Viaduct, it crossed the River Itchen and its water meadows to link the Didcot, Newbury and Southampton Railway (DN&SR) to the LSWR’s main line.

The viaduct was last used by the railway on 2 April 1966. The line it carried closed as a result of the Beeching Axe, and is now open to walkers and cyclists as part of National Cycle Network Route 23.
