Tadej Pogačar and Mathieu van der Poel—two absolute beasts on bikes—rewrote the Milan San Remo script this past Saturday! Pogačar powered up the Cipressa in 8:59 at 37.6 kph, but it was Van der Poel who took the victory. In today’s GCN Racing News Show, Dan Lloyd dives into the key stats and breaks down the race itself—plus, takes a look at the women’s event as well.

  1. What did you make of this weekend's racing?! 🤯 How did you feel about the men's Milan Sanremo finale? 💥 Let us know in the comments! 👇

  2. Amazing race. The length and gradients for the last 2 climbs are just perfect for giving other riders a chance, any steeper or longer and Pogacar would win.

  3. I’m relatively new to watching cycling as opposed to doing it. But Saturday’s men’s race was exceptional, so exciting.

Usually I prefer the women’s competition because it’s less of a foregone conclusion. But this time the men’s was absolutely gripping

  4. It’s impossible to be bored watching Pogacar. He doesn’t know how to ride a dull race. Saturday’s race was like watching two heavyweight champions going blow-for-blow, toe-to-toe. And a fantastic contribution by Ganna as well, boxing clever to keep himself in contention til the end.

  5. Now THAT is an impressive podium! The Hour Record holder and multiple gold medalist on the track, the greatest Grand Tour cyclist of his generation (Pog), and the greatest all-around cyclist of his time (MVDP).

  6. If it was one dominant rider it might… might be boring. But when there are two great riders with different strengths it’s quite interesting to watch.

  7. nah… the way Vincenzo or Matej went helter skelter down Poggio to beat the pack of hungry sprinters was more exciting….but I am a sucker for breakaways… though this one was fun as well.

  8. What I saw again and felt was that this would be Vanderpaul's first and last victory over Pogacar this year, because this is the last flat course. How dare I predict it.

  9. It was Ramirez, The Kurgan and Connor Macleod that proclaimed "There can be only one!" and with this epic battle, such was the case. MvdP was clearly the strongest but any number of minor tweaks or movements could have had Pippo Ganna or el Pogi take the win. Did I want Pogi to win? Yes. Ganna? What a result for his country that would have been. In the end, the race for fourth and beyond had everyone asking 'what the hell was that..?' Boring? Not on your life and if racing continues on like this, it will be a very exciting season.

  10. Too bad MVDP hides his strava. I'm sorry, and maybe I'll get a lot of flack for this, but the only reason pro-cycling exists is because of the fans. Hiding your Strava should be a choice for 'normal' people, but pros shouldn't do it. Sure, hide the power if you want, I can agree with that. But just seeing speed and times isn't going to make any difference. We could calculate it via the video is available for everyone to see anyways. Just list it.

  11. Nice info. Thx!
What a show we are enjoying!
PS you did a very good job of showing the contrast of Pogi being out of position closing gaps, while MvdP surfed wheels with flawless perfection.

  12. Good on Pogacar, for wanting to win a race that isn't quite suited to him. It was a bit disappointing that MVDP avoided Strade Bianche. What a race Milan San Remo was, all three were and are superstars

  13. Compared to any of The Greatests wins this is boring! This demonstrates exactly why Pog is not among the Greatest. As to comparing him to Le cannibale, well, Merckx shooked the whole field going up the Poggio to win, Merckx shooked the whole field going down the Poggio to win, Merckx beat the field in a sprint, to win! Eddy could and did do it all. Pog cannot! Having stated Fact, i will say Pog is the best rider in the last 30 years, possibly since Le Blaireau.

  14. GCN – sorry that your boy didnt make it 😂but when Mvdp is in top form , he is untouchable… as seen here at Milan Sanremo. An astounding race – kudos to all 3 monstrous riders

  15. I have nothing but admiration to both of these supreme athletes for their incredible accomplishments. And to the rest of the field as well. These teams are incredible.

Let's hope there isn't a doping scandal that unmasks their wins. Please…no more Armstrongs guys.

  16. I wonder how I got addicted to cycling, attracting new fans is difficult, the men’s Milan san Ro was 5.5 hours of complete utter boredom then 45min of blind excitement 🤷‍♀️ it needs an overhaul

  17. What a great finale, I was on the edge of my seat, Pogacar knows how to light up a race and he has motivated his rivals to up their game and the fireworks are simply spectacular.

  18. I don't mind watching the same group of riders win as long as there is a legitimate battle for the win. I'm not interested in watching MvDP or Pog solo to victory in every race. I'm also glad that Pog is doing these races considering that one bad crash could destroy his chances of winning the tour.

  19. The best thing for me about the dominance of MVdP and Pogi in the monuments, is what now happens in the other racing. It seems like the other top riders are lighting up the "smaller" (but still big) races. If the top 2 aren't there, they all think they have to get the win which makes for great racing.

  20. Outstanding analysis! One correction though: It was MVDP and Ganna who ripped up Pogi's script…to go solo by about a minute on the Cipressa, but those two hung on and the Poggio's just not enough of a climb for Pogi to have a real advantage over the others. Then it was sprint time, and those two are built better for that.

  21. Not sure that SDWorx "played it perfectly all day" – When they went over the Cipressa with THREE SDWorx riders in the small group that separated (substantially) off the front, why didn't they press that advantage? They had THE fastest sprinter, and THE fastest climber (on a short climb) with a an obviously strong domestique. Saving that tactic for next year?
