Day 20. 48km 84191kms 8yrs)
Patrice prepared a continental breakfast of *excellent* croissants, black coffee, and large bowls of warm milk to which a splash of coffee was added. I adore this country!
By the time I’d been to the ATM and done some grocery shopping it was 11am so I planned only to go about 50kms. I was following (mostly) the Eurovelo route along the Côte d’Opale. A couple of side trips took me to clifftop lookouts with stunning views, – though not quite as far as England – while in between large sandunes separated me from the sea.
At the supermarket I’d picked up some of my favourite French things so lunched on fresh baguette with crem de marron chestnut paste at Cap Gris-Nez. From here the road dropped down to Wimereux with its large promontory beside the sea.
A little south the map showed a collection of WWII bunkers of varying sizes which photos indicated could be visited so this is where I’d planned to camp. But I found the area all fenced off; an out of season ticketed attraction. Some footpaths led down towards some battlements at sea level, and here amongst these path ways I found a gorgeous spot sheltered from the wind looking directly out to sunset. There were still a few joggers about, but by the time I settled into my fondu and rosé I had the place to myself as the red sun slipped behind the horizon.
