It’s been 15 years since Dan Lloyd’s first (and only) bike fit! Back then, he was in his prime—strong, flexible, and even aero. But times have changed. Bike positions have evolved, and so has Dan. So, does his bike fit need an update?! 🚴‍♂️💨

  1. Cycling addicts watch a lot of bike fit videos online as we each are in constant search of the holy grail of bike fit. I have to say this bike fit protocol is the most advanced I have ever seen as scanning the body is really next level aka AI can be a useful tool but perhaps at present time, with limited algorithms that really drill down on why riders suffer discomfort on their bikes due to prolonged repetition/overuse which cycling brings.

I will throw some nuance into the conversation. Not really a counternarrative but rather adjunctive to what you learned. It is a rare human being that is perfectly symmetric. I have never seen one and same applies to me as well. Most don't have identical leg length or even foot length. You showed a-symmetry on your saddle based upon pressure mapping. "Generally' this is due to leg length discrepancy which even affects yaw position of the rider on the bike aka rotation viewing from above aka one knee closer to the top tube than the other.
Philosophically, this 'asymmetry' isn't resolved by 'seeing a physio therapist'. A physio therapist, with respect, can't change your bone length in your body. What you really need is a fitter who can measure you for leg length discrepancy and dynamically evaluate your pedal stroke while being fitted. That is how you arrive at a more even pressure distribution on the saddle. Most that get this adjusted, generally by shimming cleat position, its pretty transformative on the bike.
Perhaps the smartest fitter online I have ever seen is Neill Stanbury out of Australia who is a highly specialized physiotherapist who works solely with cyclists and positional biomechanics. He invariably adjusts fit based upon our body asymmetry, virtually all of us have. This is a rather stark departure from what you were advised by the fitter in this video.

I hope you understand the philosophical disconnect. Referring you to a physio to resolve your asymmetry due to addressing things like muscle imbalance and perhaps related stretching and exercises for muscle weakness is the polar opposite of accepting that our bodies are never symmetric based upon bone length differences side to side. Not just femur/tibia length differences but foot length differences 'side to side' which affects where the cleat is mounted to the shoe.
Since you are a professional bike rider and well known thru GCN and Neill is pretty famous as well, you would be well served to contact him for a collaboration.
    Best of luck Dan.

  2. One of us has had a bike fit and it made a big difference to riding comfort. It also meant the correct size frame was ordered together with cleat colour, handlebar width and stem length. Well worth the money. I haven’t had a bike fit yet as I haven’t ridden very much at all yet, but I will.

  3. id be interested to know if this method of fit can work for people with a-symmetries or other problems. What if this computer generated position gives you pain?

  4. I think Dan has a a slight scoliosis or similar. I am not a medical professional, but you can see his dysbalance of his left and right side, which can lead to a dysbalance in the weight distribution on the saddle. Here are a few moments where it becomes obvious:
at 13:40 his right shoulder (left from our perspective) drops lower than the other
at 7:30 his leftside hip sits lower than his right side hip. quite clear here from the picture. He seems to tilt to one side.

  5. Thanks Dan ,crew , and Mateo I got a bike fit 10 yers ago because I was advised to , I had just started riding again , new bike etc. I'll ask if I should again , the place is a walk away . Be safe

  6. This is absolutely bizarre. Why is anyone doing a bike fit in the drops. Are you going to do any portion of this ride in the drops?? This is completely bizarre. I’m gobsmacked by what I’ve just seen 😬

  7. Selle Italia sponsor GCN, so the video will not highlight any shortcomings of the method or technology applied. As others said, it's unthinkable to do a bike fit while completely ignoring hood position. Hood mounting on the bars alone can change the reach a few cm without changing stem length or saddle setback. Also, Dan is positioned pretty far forward on the saddle, should sit further back, but the ID match suggests to put the saddle even further back?!? That would cause you sit even more on the nose of the saddle. Too much reliance on the technology in this fit for my taste. And the ID match algorithm is fed with tousands of bikefits to train it, but it stil suggests changes by calculating averages. A good bike fit looks at one unique rider (physiology, movement patterns, assymetries, riding style, experience) and suggests changes based on that rider's input and feedback, not based on averages.

  8. I'm an idmatch bike fitter in Toronto, Canada. I'm awaiting the pressure mapping hardware myself as its just been released. This system is incredible in my opinion, but there are lots of things still to discuss with the customer as the fit is occurring and after as well. The really amazing thing about a system like this, is I can dial in the fit to the mm while the customer is on the smart bike and get instant live feedback. Coming from 23 years in IT background and having had 4 fits with different reputable fitters, they were always different. The idmatch fit for me has had the position nailed within a few mm for each test in the same discipline I do. Its accurate to say the least.

I've swapped out the non hood bars for adjustable bars with shifters attached to make it easier for the customer to test on the hoods after the test in the drops is done. Again though, open discussion with the customer is key here to make a fit successful.

  9. i dont like the idea of bike shoes
    a. i dont race
b.i ride in flatties, and mtb shoes(no cleats)
c.its an expense i can do without
    d. gcn have already done content flatties vs clip ins and its negligable (for ordinary riders)

  10. A cool concept for another video would be to send Dan to a reputable more traditional fitter (a person I guess haha) and see if he was happier with the result! Great video and thanks for all the info
