Is cycling categorically the most brutal sport in the world? After last week’s crashes and brutal weather at Paris-Nice and Tirreno-Adriatico, it sure seems like it!

Plus, Dan Lloyd and Conor Dunne discuss the man who averaged 268w for 24 hours, the best bike paths they’ve ever seen, and the incredible sight of Peter Sagan dressed up as Ken with a painted-on six pack. 🤩

  1. What keeps you coming back for more despite cycling being such a brutal sport? 😅 And what's your biggest cycling achievement? 🚵‍♂

  2. Caption competition: Team Radio: "Paul, we told you, you won't make it into the bobsleigh team for the winter Olympics, and it doesn't even work like that man…"

  3. In 2001, I crashed on a training ride, suffering a broken neck and temporary paralysis. After surgery to repair my injuries, the doctor said, "If I were you, I'd stop cycling." I told him it was a good thing he wasn't me. In the years since, there have been multiple century rides, plus climbs of l'Alpe d'Huez, the Galibier, the Ramaz, Mont Ventoux, Courchevel, the Mortirolo and the Stelvio. This fall, it's cycling in Italy, Monaco, Sardinia and the Balearics!

  4. Entertaining weather conditions. Rode home in summer storms resulting in my glasses fogging up. Had to take them off only to get punched in the eyeballs by rain driven by a thunder storm. Thing is the rain is so warm you still sweat to no effect.

  5. Never ever competed, do not have the lungs. But one day riding home in Sydney summer heat and a group of teenage school boys saw me pushing my rotund body up the climb from Nth Sydney to Crowes Nest. They took the piss and gave me a cheer like the Tour fans. Wish I could laugh like that on climbs all the time.

  6. Conor: "There’s no hunger knock like a cycling hunger knock." Well… in the old English sport of fellrunning, we prefer the more earthy term "the bonk," and I can tell you that, to suffer a massive bonk two-thirds of the way through a race, at the foot of a 1900ft climb, with no emergency food about one's person, is the most devastating bonk you will ever encounter. I still carry the mental scars…

  7. A satisfying story: the first time I road over 200km. It was a 212km day, all solo. It went well until about the last 20km when a massive wind storm rolled in. 60-80km/h winds buffeting me all around. Debris flying everywhere, including a tin roof that ripped off a building almost hitting me. Great ride and an even better plate stacked high with fettuccine jambalaya at the end!

  8. The veiws and scenery keep me in love with cycling. The exploration of new roads under your own power and at a pace fast enough to cover tons of ground but slow enough to really take it in.

  9. I just love cycling, I can’t see a life without riding my bike. My current greatest achievement is finishing the 2024 Tour L’Avenir that was really a hard race 😅

  10. Probably one of my nicest endorphin-filled feelings was going over the last bump in riding into John O'Groats after some hard days riding from Lands End. I remember the feeling so well… that sudden burst of euphoria that lasted probably 30 seconds!

  11. The reason I ride my bike is the sense of freedom! It's the number one sensation I feel and I absolutely love it. I don't keep going back for more cos I never stop. The ride never ends, the time I'm not riding I just see as an extended feed stop. 😂 Biggest sense of achievement on the bike? Completing The Peaks Tour. Funnily enough though not the first time but the second time. The first time I didn't know what I was doing and finished as a crumpled pile of skin and bones. I really didn't enjoy it. The second time I planned all my training and lead up sportives I ate well and prepared properly. I knocked 1 hour off my time and finished with a huge smile on my face. I'd planned my whole year towards that sportive, the sense of accomplishment was amazing. 😊

  12. On the topic of what makes me come back for more, the answer was I didn't I stopped cycling for about 20 years.

But then when my GP diagnosed high blood pressure and cardiologist weighed me I was 110 kg (I'm 6 foot 2). I was also getting out of breath if I walked up the stairs for a couple of floors.

So now I do turbo sessions twice a week and a 17 km walk. But once I've got the money to get a bike where the breaks and gears are safe then I'll do outdoor rides.

But my motivation is different now, when I was younger I did it because I loved it and wanted to go faster, but now I cycle because I want to live longer, although it is still fun but my biggest motivation is my health..

  13. I realize this is a road cycling channel, but the proliferation of E mountain bikes are tearing up the trails. They go twice as far twice as fast and they weigh twice as much, how could they not. Or twice as fast

  14. ahh Bentonville, aka the home of Walmart. True story: One of the Walton brothers is a big fan of mountain biking, and employs teams of professional trail builders. for the past 15 years, they build up to 4 miles of new trails in the greater Bentonville area per week!

  15. My achievement is smaller than most but nevertheless a big one for me. My wife and I rode from Bristol to Reading on our first bikepacking trip last year. The canal path was great (mostly) but 90 miles is a big deal for a 120kg person with bike packing bags. Definitely type 2 fun for me but the sense of achievement is intoxicating. GCN has been a huge motivation for me. Keep doing what you're doing.
