Join me on a meaningful Lenten cycling journey as I ride to Ta’ Pinu Sanctuary and take on the steep climb of Ta’ Għammar Hill, home to the fourteen Stations of the Cross statues in Gozo, Malta. 🚴‍♂️✨

This challenging uphill trail winds through rugged terrain leading past 13 marble statues that depict moments from the Passion of Christ, from Jesus agony in the Garden of Gethsemane to the Crucifixion and Resurrection. These statues were crafted in Pietra Santa in Italy and were placed here in the early 80s, based on the designs of Maltese artist Alfred Camilleri Cauchi.

Historically, pilgrims have walked up this hill as an act of repentance during Lent and the Holy Week, making this path an official Via Crucis (The Way of the Cross). The first statue, that of the Last Supper, was situated on the basilica’s Parvis. It has now been replaced by a large mosaic monument representing the 20 stations of the Cross. The remaining original 13 statues can be visited by walking up the hill. At the very top, I visit the staggering amphitheatre, and take in the breath-taking 360° views of Gozo, before making my way back down and continuing the ride past the sacred Ta’ Pinu Basilica, a site of miracles and devotion.

This ride is not just about the challenge, but it is about reflection, history and appreciating the beauty of Gozo’s landscapes and traditions.
