Do you commute everywhere by bike? ๐ดโโ๐ Why or why not? ๐ค Let us know if this video inspired you!
Absolutely agree whatever the weather I will always commute on a bike. Likewise even in winter I hate being in a car. Two years ago we brought a cargo bike from decathlon which has replaced my car for all short journeys. Even the weekly shop. It's brilliant not using the car unless we are going on longer journeys
Excellent bicycle commuting channel https://youtube.com/@shifter_cycling
What mudguards are those
Always will commute by bike whenever possible
One aspect of commuting by bike is the mental part which is maybe the most important. I commute 15 miles each way which gives me an hour to just think without real distraction. I donโt use earphones and just soak in my surroundings. Riding, shifting, braking all become second nature and while I am still paying attention with half my brain the other part is free to roam. I canโt tell you how many work or personal issues Iโve resolved on the way home and always end up in a better head space at the end of the ride.
I love this content's postivitiy. Keep it up you guys!
Once there's enough day light I'll do a 110km round trip to work twice a week.
Would do more but even fully lite up country lanes in the dark can be sketchy.
This way I leave work clothes and bits at work the day before so don't have to carry anything in either
My commute by car is 14 miles. It takes me 15 mins or so depending on traffic. These are hwy miles.
By bike it takes me about an hour and a half! The terrain is half rolling hills and half kind of flat. I've done this twice. It was a mistake.
Later when I got an ebike it took me 45 mins.
In my opinion a 30 min commute by bike is ideal.
Cound not agree more with this video. Great job guys.
Looking to getting back to commuting but was wondering how you handle fitting in training at the same time. Obviously you can do some whilst commuting but how to handle training load and high intensity work would be useful to have some tips for…
Global man: I want to ride my bicycle today but there is snow in chicago suburbs as usual so I'm stuck again in Illinois
This is my belief too only when thereโs snow on the ground, I will never bike.
10 miles out and back every day on an Orbea orca with fat tubeless tyres makes me strong fit and happier. I'm 55 and I love it..
Lets be reasonable: a 50 cc scooter will be quicker than a bike in nearly all cases.
And you forget to add the time of showering and changing clothes on your work if you decide to bike (without e motor). A speed pedelec or small scooter sounds way quicker without all the hassle. Nonetheless; i ride my ebike to work and wouldnโt trade it in the world for a car.
Great inspirational video. I live about 7 miles from work. Last year my truck broke so I started riding my bike in February. It is a great commute. But I live in Alaska. Central Alaska. And its is cold in February. So this year. With the vehicle situation figured out. Its been really hard to get up the motivation to leave in the morning. I have all the cold weather gear and the studded tires. It's just the motivation I lack. But. Its starting to get (a little) warmer. So. in the next period of time I am looking forward to getting back to the bike commute.
Typically I drive in on Monday. And ride home. Because generally the ride home is nice. Then I'm suck home without a car. So, unless I want to wake my wife and admit I'm too wimpy to ride in I don't really have any options. That really helps for the mornings that are rainy or just wet. Then, by quitting time its usually nice again. So I give in to temptation and ride home. Because I love it, and its nice. I have Fridays off so typically I will drive home on Thursday night so I have the truck at the house incase I want/need to do anything on the weekend.
The main issue that stopped me riding to work (now retired) was no safe place to leave the bike on arrival. Even the secure bike sheds were not safe.
I bike to office every day for 10 years now. It's 10k and find it perfect to get the body going in the morning. During autumn and winter It's not that pleasent but with the right clothing it's okay.
I bought a bike. But each morning i would have to carry it from the shed through the house as we have no exit from the back garden.
I'm a cyclist in Southern US. I like commuting to work on my bike, but it 100% slower. My commute is only 10 miles, but with our heat and humidity, it requires a shower once I get to work, which takes more time than parking a car and walking in. If I commute anywhere else, no matter how slowly, the question is how acceptable would it be to show up dripping with sweat? Out here, cycling is fun exercise, and commuting is largely for the cars.
I have been commuting on a daily basis for the past 12 years. Find it really helpful for my mental health. Sadly Iโm not able to ride at the moment as I had a crash after puncturing going round a corner and broke my collarbone, now having to use public transport and finding it frustrating to say the least
My 30mile round trip cycling commute certainly ainโt faster than driving (about twice as long), but when I get home Iโve already done my workout for the day so that alone saves me time and adds to positive mental health.
Now this is a cycling pro to emulate! Go Conor! Long-time bike commuter. There were times when I put it down after a move for a job, but once I got into the swing of it again, thinking back, I should have been able to keep at it even during those times (mostly).
I was commuting by bike for years, but not every day. For two years now I'm commuting every day by bike and I love it. To say it with Si's words: riding a bike is pure fun.
Alternate my commute into East London between bike + car, 12 miles by bike 14/16 by car with 5 to 10 minutes difference between the two.
My default is to commute by bike (except for a short while when i ran instead). It's so reliable; when it snowed I'd often be one of few who'd make it into the office, because if all else failed i could push it through the worst bits – not an option with a car!
And come warm summer evenings i could turn 10km into 60km+ to make the most of them.
I love it when you, Connor, and Simon get political! Make people think about their behaviour. Cycling is the best way to get around in a city! But many people just get into the car when they leave the house without thinking. Thank you for this and your other political videos. The best thing is that many people might not see it as a political statement!
Been cycling to work for last 25 years – 5 miles one way so timewise similar to driving. The car commute always felt like part of the working day with the stress of work only over when home. As soon as I get on the bike at the end of the day that work feel disappears. No matter the weather it beats being in a traffic jam. Not having to search for a parking space in the morning also a godsend!! I'm sure there will be non cyclists who find these videos so keep up the good work GCN!
Conor's just speaking the truth, well done!
The revolution will not be motorised.
I literally am making the switch to cycle to work/home! Picking up my bike this weekend! Your channel has been the biggest help! Thank you <3
Those mudguards look great – what are they please?
Like he said, start small. I started commuting by throwing my bike in a friend's truck to get to work and then ride home. That allowed me to become comfortable and eventually start commuting both ways. Nowadays, more often than not, I drive to work with my bike in the car and ride home; next day, ride to work and then drive home. The trip is 14.5 miles one-way, about an hour for me.
I would like you make a video about how to maintenance and what kind of degreaser and lube do you used
Perhaps go in to full kit that you use for different weathers also what rucksack is it you use ?
Getting to anywhere in NYC from Long Island is such a hassle by car, could never do it. For over ten years Iโve been using two bikes. One to the train station in my town and one waiting in Brooklyn about 2.5 miles away, 8 miles or so in a day. Use two locks and cheap looking bicycle and havenโt gotten one stolen in maybe 7 years. I think itโs better option than the foldable bikes or electric scooters people bring on the train. Great video! Thanks
Great video! Really digging the advocacy and encouragement videos. Been watching GCN for years and it's always worth it. Keep it up. BTW, I am a stay at home parent and my wife works. She can walk or ride to her job and we can access all daily needs by bike. I ride every day for something and our kid rides to elementary school every day. I can sometimes go weeks to a month without getting in a car. We have them and use them when needed. But they aren't a daily necessity which is perfect and if more that could do that did so traffic would be a fraction of what it is.
I have commuted daily since 2006 when I was a freshman in college. I continued commuting through my career- 6.5 miles each way-with my 2 year old enclosed in a bakfiets type cargo bike. My hope is he learns firsthand the Scandinavian motto of no bad weather, just bad clothing choices, as we ride so long as itโs 10F (-12C) or warmer using his microwaveable heating pad plus winter attire and enclosed. At 6.5miles it is about the same travel time door-to-door, since driving requires me to park about a 5 minute walk away. Whenever I drive I almost always regret it; I arrive stressed because I donโt get the mental prep time in the morning and mental decompression time in the evening. Commuting by bike has been the best decision ever and I will literally only consider employment places that I can get to safely via bike
