Tuesday 4th March 2025:

After spending the night moored up just after Stanthorne Lock on the Middlewich Branch of the Shropshire Union Canal, I thought I’d take a closer look at Wardle Lock, back in Middlewich, and the Wardle Canal – shortest in the UK at 35 metres long – so I bundled the Brompton out of the boat, donned some cycling gear, and rode back along the towpath.

Luckily it was a bright sunny day and the towpath was pretty good, if a little bumpy at first. It was an enjoyable ride and after returning to Gladys, I cruised back to the marina (Aqueduct Marina in Church Minshull). Saw several trains crossing on bridges, but the canal itself was fairly quiet.

This cruise was great, spoiled a bit though by my scratching the side of the boat on some overhanging tree branches – of which there were many… this wasn’t helped by other boaters choosing to moor directly opposite them!

Hope you enjoy the video 👍

  1. Don't worry about the mooring, we (hubby) sometimes have issues getting out on ours, wind direction is an issue 😊 You'll be fine out in the cut

Just a tip, use the cleats for your centre line or the paint on the handrail will rub

  2. Check if your sunglasses have polarised lenses. I had to switch to my other sunglasses because I couldn’t read my mobile screen through them because of the polarised light from the phone. If you rotate the phone or go pro, see if the picture improves and that will tell you if they’re polarised 😊 😎

  3. Nice vlog Jeff, Sorry about the scratches on Gladys we've never owned a new boat but when I was working I use to hate it when I got a new van and it ended up with scratches down the panels off trees down country lanes, Never been in the Chippy near the Kings Head pub but we went in the Big Lock pub many years ago that was very nice, Saw something on FB today that they've withdraw 15M for refurbishment of the Anderton Lift hope this doesn't disturb your plans, Take care.😊

  4. Hi Jeff. T-Cut Colour Fast may just do the job for you. I used the grey variant on my car a couple of years ago when I got surface scratches from bushes sticking out on a narrow road, and it worked a treat, so it may be worth a try. I bet it felt good to get on the Brompton again. I should be out cycling again soon on the canals. I've serviced both bikes, so I just need to work less hours (overtime) and get out again. Was that the biggest barn in the world or what at 13:12 in the video 😄 Great video as always Jeff and I'm glad you got your fish n chips…a contractual requirement as far as I'm concerned.
