Hello, Iโm Joyce, an independent sustainability consultant.
๐ง๐ปโโ๏ธ I recently visited two water dams in Wales with friends, and for the first time, I saw the vital role of water as an ecosystem service with my own eyes. While water covers 70% of the Earthโs surface, only 0.8% of freshwater in lakes and rivers is available for human consumption.
๐ง๐ฆ The waterfalls from the dams are stunning and powerful. As I watched the rushing water, I felt a strong sense of energy and purity. I connected with the water’s force, leaving me feeling refreshed and amazed by nature’s beauty. The sound of the water was loud and exhilarating, and I could see how it sparkled in the sunlight. It left me feeling refreshed and inspired, reminding me of how incredible the natural world can be.
๐ด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ท๓ ฌ๓ ณ๓ ฟ Wales, with its high rainfall and numerous lakes, is one of the UKโs most water rich areas, supplying 20% of the countryโs water despite having only 4.8% of the population. However, climate change poses significant threats to water availability. Experts warn that low river flows in England could decrease by 20% even with global warming limited to 1.5 degrees Celsius, a threshold we reached in 2024.
๐ In scenarios of 2 degrees and 4 degrees of warming, summer river flows could drop by 30% and 50%, respectively. With over 100 dams and reservoirs, Wales plays a crucial role in managing water supply. As I explored these structures, I considered the importance of sustainable water management in the face of climate change. ๐ณ๐ฆ
