Starting my solo trip through Poland, I decided to visit some truly unusual places that most people rarely get to see. First, I visited the Zofiowka Psychiatric Hospital, an abandoned mental health facility where I managed to enter illegally. It was an incredible yet eerie experience, walking through the crumbling hallways, witnessing sights that were simply shocking. The rooms, once filled with people, were now swallowed by silence, wrapped in an invisible scent of abandonment and time. Every step felt tense as cold air seeped through the decayed walls, untouched for years. What was once a place of care had now become a haunting reminder of a forgotten past. There were no signs of life, only ruins, forgotten paths, and old objects left to decay. The experience was difficult to put into words, but one thing was clear—it left an unforgettable impression on me.

However, this psychiatric hospital has an even darker history. Zofiowka was founded in the 1910s, and during World War II, when Poland was occupied by the Nazis, it became a place of horrific human experiments. Under German orders, hospital staff participated in brutal “scientific” procedures, experimenting on mentally ill patients in cruel attempts to “cure” and control their minds. This was a site of systematic atrocities that left deep scars on both its victims and history itself. The Nazi occupation cast a long, dark shadow, turning the hospital into a testament to the horrors that unfolded across Europe. After the war, these events were erased from collective memory, but now they resurface as the abandoned Zofiowka stands as a chilling reminder of the past.

After this unsettling visit, I continued my journey to the Orzel bike track for another mysterious and captivating exploration. Built in the 1960s, Orzel was one of Poland’s first indoor cycling tracks. It was used for both professional and amateur competitions but was abandoned in the 1990s due to political and economic changes. Today, it stands forgotten and decayed. I launched my drone to capture it from above—an empty, vast space now overtaken by wild nature, reclaiming the man-made track. I managed to sneak in, crossing the fence illegally, and explored the area—old tracks, crumbling buildings, and forgotten remnants of its former life. A place once alive with competition and passion now stood silent, nature slowly consuming its remains. It was both impressive and deeply melancholic. A place that once held so much energy now had only emptiness and decaying structures left behind.

Both of these locations have unique stories, and although they are very different, they share the same feeling—forgotten places once full of life, now left to the cold wind and fading memories. Stepping into them felt like entering a secret world—one that no longer exists as it once did, yet still holds its mysteries. This was a journey into Poland’s abandoned past, and it certainly left a lasting impression on me, which I now want to share with you.
