This week, Dan Lloyd & Si Richardson discuss how many of us might be making a fundamental mistake with our cycling, focusing on power not speed… We dive into why some of the most physiologically-gifted riders never get the results you’d expect, whilst others, with less power, are amongst the world’s best! 🚴‍♂️💨

Plus, we cover cycling glasses with built-in A.I, a GCN shoutout in a parliamentary debate, hack/bodge of the week, AND, an update on knitting while cycling. 🤣

  1. I like to do the full Clarkson: speed and power. I have done the same Sunday 60k circuit over the years as well as club runs. My fastest average speed of 29.8kph had a 2 hour power of 190W and a 29.2kph average had a 2 hour average of 245W. I found this a bit odd.

  2. Increase your speed by turning on the auto pause and taking plenty of breaks during the ride. Also it helps to start your ride at the top of a hill and end it at the bottom. Just kidding. I don't even display speed on my head unit but I do have a "standard" hour ride that I've tracked over several years

  3. Watt’s a power meter?? Ideal for those easy ride days ie don’t go over X, as for juniors an odd tool at that age there naturally getting stronger not necessarily pulling more watt’s, just pedal harder into the wind and enjoy the breeze

  4. There is the thing that is in all sports, your head!! How many athletes quit because the dont fit themselfs in the pro role, adjusting to that kind of life can be very very daunting!!!😮😮

  5. Always love all the comments about how the quality and production values have gone up since GCN went back to being independent – I assume non of these commenters saw any of the documentaries on GCN+ 🤷‍♂️

  6. The art of slipstreaming is totally lost on most people. The amount of amateurs and pros I see just riding on the wheel rather than finding the pocket is astonishing. There’s so much to be gained from clever positioning. Even if there’s just two of you.

  7. If there were more riders like Marianne Vos in the women's (kinda) pro peloton… that sport might actually be interesting to watch. But there's not. So it's not. I love it when she pips cocky / inexperienced riders RIGHT on the line in big races. Always brings a smile to my face. That should be a thing (if it's not already): "You totally just got Vossed!" (meaning you celebrated and eased up too soon–and lost on the line).

  8. As a new racer doing okay so far I think efficiency is huge. I weigh 59kg and my FTP of 3.9 w/kg is both mediocre and low in the absolute sense, about 230W. It’s not worth me putting in a solo attack or sitting on the front. I don’t have the raw power. My general strategy revolves around reading the race and doing as little work as possible. Find the biggest least aero looking guy and sit behind them. Rest whenever possible. My short duration power numbers are pretty decent, about 16 w/kg for 5 seconds and 7 w/kg for a minute. If I need it, I’ve got it, but my goal is to not use it. Conserving energy is like a minigame, a fun challenge! I think it helps to see it that way.

  9. Excellent analysis. I think Peio Bilbao is a good example of a rider always in GC top 10 general without a single attack or tacking any kind of responsibility. He has even managed to win stages thanks to the effort of rivals

  10. Enjoy the show. But perhaps you could remove Pogacar saying “Now it’s time for cycling shorts”. Would be nice to see other riders

  11. Wonder if those that smash their Zwift results (as discussed around the 9min mark) is that the riders are great on a static bike in "lab" conditions. But when it comes to the real world and environmental factors they can't adapt. Lack of functional training.

  12. The metric you are overlooking is the “technology “ that is above your shoulders. Experience, knowledge, wits, reading the race. Biggest “power” comes from brain power.
