Hi – I’ve a well used Shimano cs-m7000 cassette which is on my son’s bike. I noticed the sprokets were loose so I took it apart and gave it a good clean, but it’s still the same. The freehub itself isn’t loose, rather it feels like the cassette isn’t sitting tight to it. The lock ring is nice and tight.
I’ve not sure if that means the freehub needs replacing or the cassette or it’s not been put on correctly somehow.
All the bits for the cassette were there, I checked on the Shimano site for a breakdown.
Help!

If the nut holding the cassette together is fully tight, then something did not get properly lined up when restacking them. I pulled my daughters cassette last week, cleaned it up, and restacked them and had this same problem. I pulled it apart, and meticulously restacked it ensuring that every sprocket was properly lined up and the spacers were properly inserted and after two tries, it stacked and tightened properly. I can’t tell you when or which of the sprockets were not set in, but it had to be one of them.
Sometimes the 11t sprocket doesn’t quite line up with the splines properly so your lock ring will tighten against it but it doesn’t tighten onto the rest of the cassette.
Check the 11 and make sure it’s fully seated before you put the lock ring on.
Is the hub dented? It happens with plastic hubs under pressure.
Depending on the freehub type it might be a missing (extra) spacer (e.g. a mavic freehub needs a small spacer on the inner side to use a shimano 11speed mtb cassette). If the cassette is correctly lined up this can be somewhat recognized if the thread for the lock ring doesnt end “inside” the smallest sprocket but in line or above the smallest sprocket (sorry dont know how to describe).
Solved – thanks for all the help
