Went to look at a Domane AL 4 I have my eye on. The guy at the bike shop raised the seat so it would fit me, and this was on the part of the seatpost that was exposed after he raised it. Just wondering what it is and if it’s normal?

looks like grease? touch it.
It could also be abrasion from assembly paste that acts as a friction medium between post and frame so the post doesn’t slip down. It can dull carbon fiber or the paint on alloy seat posts.
Wipe clean with rag ,it’s either grease or non slip paste ,either way it’s not required Just wipe clean .

That is automotive HD low-high temp grease.
It’s grease. It means they know how to put a bike together.
