Do you know what a cycle highway is? A cycle highway is a large, non-stop, asphalted, and well-designed off-road cycle path. In recent years, the Netherlands has been developing a vast network of cycle highways (snelfietsroutes in Dutch) to make a smoother bicycle connection between the suburbs or nearby villages and the city. The ultimate goal behind these high-quality functional cycling routes is to reduce car congestion around Dutch cities by tempting car drivers living within 15 km from work to commute by bicycle. However, better be careful with the wording. Today, urban mobility professionals in the Netherlands recommend to rather talk about “continuous cycle ways”. In this video, we travelled to the Netherlands to understand why and to discover how to build acceptance for continuous cycle ways.
To go further, check out this great video of Active Towns with Angela van der Kloof about how to frame and talk about our cycle paths: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MZQkXlC5mxU&t=1056s
This video was shot in Autumn 2022 in collaboration with Breda University of Applied Sciences. Many thanks to Angela van der Kloof (International Strategic Advisor at Mobycon), Gwen Boon (Programme Manager Cycling at Province of Utrecht), and Esther van Garderen (Director at Fietsersbond) for participating in this video!

One challenge where I live is that cycling is still very much seen as a sport used to commute by the super fit young professional, and the paths for cycling aren’t wide enough to facilitate a variety of speeds. We definitely have some widening of paths to do, and some filling in of network gaps. This video gives me some insight on how I can think about improvements. Thank you!
