On day three of my Tarentaise Triple i went for the big one, the highest paved mountain pass in the Alps, Col de l’Iseran! Not only is it the highest, but it is almost certainly the longest climb in the alps – nearly 50km if starting in Bourg st Maurice, over 70km if you start all the way down in Moutiers! Naturally with those kind of numbers the average gradient is not particularly steep, but it is the length and the altitude that gets you! If you normally live at sea level then you are going to want to do a warm up climb or two to acclimatise before attempting this.
