🚴‍♂️ 2025 E-Bike Law Update: What’s Changing? 🚴‍♀️

Last year the government set about making changes to the e-bike law in the UK. After a year of consideration the government have finally released a statement on whether the e-bike law in the Uk is due change or if there isn’t enough supportive evidence for change to e-bike law in the UK.

We’ll cover:
✅ The current e-bike laws and how they affect riders.
✅ The new proposed laws for 2025 that had everyone talking.
✅ What actually happened to those proposed changes—were they approved, rejected, or modified?

If you ride an e-bike or are thinking about getting one, staying informed is key! Don’t get caught off guard by new regulations.

  1. anyone who rides these overpowered pedal bikes, just need to get the motor wattage removed from the hubs/wheel, it's what my friend did and had someone laser print the legal limit wattage on there, he's had 0 issues. the police just check the hub over for the print and then look over the dashboard, but most companies now have power kill switches that lock the mode and it can't be changed without a specific button sequence.

  2. Anyone pedalling an ebike on level ground can reach 18/20mph which equatesto the safe speed limits imposed around most towns… So why not set the max speed to that and most riders will be happy that they don't have to deal with the assistance cutting in and out and potentially causing a hazard in traffic…. instead they could stay with the flow and prevent impatient drivers doing silly overtaking maneuver's

  3. Nobody has to pay road tax on anything; it has not been levied for decades. Keepers of motor vehicles have to pay vehicle excise duty on a scale related to their CO2 emissions. Likewise, the requirement for compulsory third party insurance is specific to motor vehicles
    E bikes don't emit any C02

  4. It’s beyond a joke at this point… i started off with a 250w motor and was travelling around 15mph max and it’s just too slow. It causes issues with cars etc nobody wants to be behind someone riding on the road or setting off from traffic lights as slow as a snail because our motor isn’t powerful enough. The battery’s hardly last. however I upgraded to a 750w and never had any issues. I wear a helmet and gloves and never once been pulled over by the police. Many police cars and police vans have drove past me but never pulled me over. Aslong as you follow road laws and don’t ride like a donut they don’t really bother from my experience. I’d say the government need to fix up and change the laws. Let us ride decent bikes. They say they’re targeting “balaclava gangs” most riders wear it because of the wind etc. who cares what someone is wearing on there face? It means nothing. As to people saying anything above 250w is too powerful either can’t handle an e-bike, dont own one or have heard “bad stories” about them and think everyone is the same… not everyone on an e-bike robs people. We just want to have a good ride at a decent speed and I see nothing wrong with it. 🤷‍♂️

  5. I suggest everyone who thinks our e-bike laws are inadequate should write/email the DfT to tell why their decision is the wrong one. When they get lots of e-bike users complaining, they may have a re-think and reconsider their stance.

  6. There is a ebike company that sells road legal e-bikes with throttle. But this is so damn stupid. But this coming from from uk company’s who sell well over priced e-bikes. Who them selfs sell so many imports.

  8. Britain is probably mean on speed because of phone snatchers. 15.5 mph is mean. Always problematic in the long run when people who don't ride makes law for riders.. 59mph in a country in Africa. 15.5 is slow with any engine..

  9. I am astonished that you even pose the question whether ebikes should be ridden on the pavement. I have ridden cycles all my life and now ride an ebike exclusively, but am happy to ride it on the road where it should be.

  10. Ebikes are meant to assist cyclists who need help to reach a reasonable speed on the road.
I ride in group road rides in a category where 50 mile rides finish with an average speed of 15 to 16mph which isn't easy.
Why do you think its reasonable to be able to travel faster than that.
I'm a motorcyclist and cyclist but regrettably have to agree with the government on this one, you can't be trusted.

  11. You already can go over 15.5mph mph on the roads legally….. it's called a motorbike!!

Once you get a vehicle with enough power to comfortably do 30mph then the pedals become pointless.

That's where the name moped came from. They were originally motor-pedal, mo-ped. But because the pedals were pointless they gradually fell out of use.

Ebikes are for people who just need a bit of assistance cycling. It sounds like you need to take your motorbike test and get a proper bike.

Over 15.5mph is way too fast for cycle paths and for something that is legal for kids to whizz round on with no license or insurance.

  12. Selling more e-bikes means less money to road tax, insurance, petrol-diesel and a few more 😉
Are you nuts 🥜 ? Less money? Let the peasants pedal to work, let them suffer 🤫

  13. Ebikes and normal bikes should not be legally allowed on the roads in the UK as the UK is NOT a country built for them. The UK is a spread-out country and massively oversized cities with hundreds of thousands of houses instead of apartment buildings which causes cities to be extremely spread out. The narrow and winding design of British roads also does not help the pro-bicycle argument as visibility is poor on most junctions and corners. The UK is built around the automotive industry with bicycles being more of a nature hobby.

Bicycles should be allowed on the roads only if carried by cars, trucks or a tow. Anything beyond that is a road hazard. If the UK infrastructure would have been designed like the one in the Netherlands, then yes, bicycles would have been great. But when roads or sidewalks are narrowed to make way for a bicycle lane" then it's clear that bicycles and ebikes were never meant to be a means of public transportation.

  14. There are only a few selected cities in the UK that are running the official e-scooter trials, via local authorities working with private companies. They are electronically limited to riding only in defined areas. The trials aren't about making money, but testing how well they fit in with the current infrastructure, on roads, cycle paths, mixing with cars, pedestrian and cyclists etc. All with a view to then making changes in the law. Currently they are classed as motor vehicles, so riders have to have both a licence and insurance. Riders and the scooters are subject to the same rules and regulations as regular motor vehicles. Lights and horns have to be fitted etc. The insurance is provided by the company that runs the scheme. The cost of running these trials, installing and maintaining the equipment, processing payments, regular collection, recharging and maintenance of scooters etc, doesn't leave much left over. Hopefully at some point, a decision will be made on the legal requirements for using privately owned scooters on public roads etc.

  15. The cycling groups again for the umpteenth time have shown their lack of regard for people who want to cycle but find it difficult to ride a non powered bike.

As usual they said no, the only reason we had 200 watts was because of the cycling groups and now they are still against the law changes.

They couldn't stop the extra 50 watts as that was an EU thing but they seem to do anything they can to prevent an upgrade to electric bikes.

Which makes me wonder why the govt would take any notice of them at all as people who ride unasisted bikes don't normally have any interest in electric bikes.

From what I understand the govt stated that due to the concerns of cycling groups blah blah.

So again, thank you cycling groups.

Electric bikes are starting to die in London, unless you are in the center, the one thing that made them more popular was the lack of interest by the law, however if the law is going to take a bigger interest in what people ride then many will just revert back to their gas guzzling cars, or their road hogging hugge electric car.

I swapped my car and motorcycle for the use of an electric bike and it did me well for 4 plus years, then I heard about the clamp down and switched back to my car.

I wonder how many other people have done the same.

  16. The government hate e-bikes because it is almost free transport and they don’t make money of it. They don’t give a crap about people getting injured.

  17. Anything other than pedal assist is emotorbike why would anyone think its okay for those on an electric vehicle not to have to pass a test yet those on bikes of other fuels have to and then there registration insurance mot ect. Seeing the way ebikes are being used i feel they should be an outright ban if the users cannot or will not use them as they should be.

  18. The difference between using the pedals or a throttle is, is the bike now still a bicycle or a motorised vehicle, even at 4mph I can't see how this is legal to use, having a throttle makes it a motorised vehicle so legally it has to comply as with all other self propelled vehicles on the road and so should also need road tax be it free until April 2025, MOT and insurance.

I'm not sure why you think you can ride these on pavements tbh, even normal bicycles are not allowed and if I remember right even children over the age of 11 are not allowed to so what makes you think a 15mph self propelled e bike is OK, even segways got outlawed in this country for being vehicles and only allowed to be used on private land so I'm not sure what all the confusion is about.

  19. I have a car with a 210HP motor and another with a100HP motor, they both drive at exactly the same speed because the speed limit is 5mph.
Horse power, or watts has nothing to do with speed, limiting the speed by the gearing means that the bike will accelerate easier, not run faster.
Saying that, I can make a 250 watt motor run MUCH faster by increasing the battery voltage. ( just not for very long )
If they want cars off the road, why are they making it so hard to use a bike ? If they want to limit their speed, do it by AGE, that would make sense.
