“Letters to Fred” is a Holocaust work for soprano and piano written for the spinto soprano Megan Marie Hart, commissioned by the Darmstadt State Theater for the 80th International Holocaust Remembrance Day.
The work describes the fate of Fred Herzberg, a boy who survived the Kindertransport, but whose immediate family who remained in Germany was deported to Theresienstadt and Auschwitz and exterminated.
The cycle of songs consists of six movements, opens with an epilogue and concludes with a prologue, and is based on letters from the book “A Life Journey: Letters from the Jewish Herzberg Family of Detmold 1939-1946.” Fred’s story is not told in the first person, but rather emerges from the various letters written to him by his immediate and extended family, friends, and acquaintances during the war years. The four notes (fa, re, mi, re) embodies Fred’s musical signature (F R E D). This signature appears as a key motif throughout the work in various forms.

מכתבים לפרד – היא יצירת שואה לסופרן ופסנתר שנכתבה עבור זמרת הסופרן-ספינטו מייגן מארי הארט, בהזמנת התיאטרון הממלכתי של דארמשטאדט עבור יום השואה הבינלאומי ה-80.
היצירה מתארת את גורלו של פרד הרצברג, נער שניצל במשלוח הילדים (קינדר-טרנספורט), אולם משפחתו הקרובה שנותרה בגרמניה הועברה לטרזיינשטט ולאושוויץ ונכחדה
מחזור השירים מרכיב שישה פרקים, פותח באפילוג ונחתם בפרולוג, ומבוסס על מכתבים מתוך הספר “מסע חיים: מכתבים ממשפחת הרצברג היהודית מדטמולד 1939-1946”. סיפורו של פרד אינו מסופר בגוף ראשון כי אם עולה מתוך המכתבים השונים שנכתבו אליו על ידי משפחתו הקרובה והמורחבת, חבריו וידידיו במהלך שנות המלחמה
חלק מהמכתבים מולחנים במכוון על דרך הניכור ולא על דרך האמפטיה במטרה לבצע הזרה לתוכן הטרגי ולהגיע על דרך ההיפוך לביטוי אקספרסיבי. ארבעה צלילים (פה, רה, מי, רה) מגלמים את חתימתו המוסיקלית של פרד(F R E D) . חתימה זו מופיעה כמוטיב מפתח במהלך היצירה באופנים שונים
