ticking off things on my bucket list

originally this video was going to be dedicated to Tromso, but life took over & somehow, we ended up visiting lapland as well!

it was the most spontaneous thing I’ve ever done

Jordy and I had been looking forward to going to the northern lights ever since we booked this trip back in August. We researched all of the best places to go to have the best chance & landed on Tromsø, Norway; the most northern city in the world (& in deep in the arctic circle).

What we didn’t consider, was the possibility of not actually seeing them, so when night three of our four night stint in Tromsø came around & our northern lights tour was incredibly unsuccessful (& spent in what felt like a snow storm), we struggled to accept the fact that seeing the northern lights was not on the cards for us this trip.

On the 16th of December, the morning we were flying from tromso to Stockholm for another four night stay, I woke up and said to jords, “imagine if we booked a flight to go see the lights”. It was one of those comments that you make that are half joke, half serious but within 10 minutes, we had the laptop open, looking up flights and accom in Lapland.

At Tromsø airport, in the middle of a coughing fit, we booked flights & accomodation to Lapland.

We decided to fly the next day, as originally, it was meant to be a bluebird, high chance day; but when we woke up that morning, it was anything but. I was extremely sick & not getting any better after spending 4 days in -10 to -20 degrees with absolutely no sunlight, very anxious as I was PMS-ing & convinced we weren’t going to see them & the money (that I did not have), would go to waste. I had a menty b.

After getting on the flight & getting cough syrup, my anxiety calmed & I embraced this spontaneity. This was either going to be an amazing story or a funny antidote & I began to accept that.

When @experiencetourslapland picked us up that night, they explained that we would have to drive about 3 hours as there was a lot of cloud coverage. They were very confident, despite the fact that I wasn’t. I slept most of the way but was woken up at about 10pm, on the border of Sweden, to our guide screaming “Aurora! Aurora!” & there we were, in the arctic circle, staring at the northern lights, with tears in our eyes.

It all worked out in the end. It always does.
