The Crossley Gas Engine and Climax Pump is one of the machines that are in operation at the Twyford Waterworks Autumn Rally. Crossley Bros. of Manchester were among the first to manufacture the four-stroke Otto cycle gas engine in the UK. This engine, from 1895, is their standard single-cylinder engine of the period. It was designed to run on town (coal) gas, developing about 5 horsepower (3.7 kW). The engine came to Twyford in circa 1990 from a livery stables in Portsmouth. It is shown coupled to a Climax pump salvaged from a mansion at Broughton, Hampshire.
