This isn’t absurd rationalization at all. There’s just no way to get fit without using an e-bike. I mean… you’d have to go much slower and you couldn’t go near as far! So… there you go! Sometimes when I really want to get fit, I skip my e-bike entirely (which I really bought only for a few mountaineering approaches) and just go straight to my dirtbike. Super fitness and also I feel like Superman! 10x the speed and virtually unlimited distance. It’s a real game-changer for my fitness because I’d just give up if it were only my e-bike. Therefore I can get so much fitter with the dirtbike. Plus, if I see an Olympian, it’s awesome to fly by him at 100kph, or… throttle way back and just go his speed. A real joy! And I feel so strong inside! 😂😂😂😂
That was a really, really good video….
Worst part is getting e specific parts and service. I do not miss the climbs one bit. I just session jumps. I have a set amount of time I can ride and session accordingly.
I was wondering between Rocky Mountain and Specialized, who has the best e-bike ? I really love Rocky Mountain and would love to keep buying Canadian, even if it’s made in China like almost everything else. I just want to buy an e-bike with the best outcome and the least amount of problems, motor and electronics wise. Any suggestions ?
You are out of your mind. I have been riding bikes for 62 years. 3 years ago I lost a kidney to cancer and dealt with a heart issue. I broke down and bought an E bike and the first time I climbed with it you couldn't wipe the smile off my face for the rest of the day. 62 years I hated climbing, now I love it. I ride a lot of cross country skiing and horse back riding trails in the Summer, I actually prefer to ride them uphill compared to downhill these days. Your number 1 E bike dislike just happens to be my number 1 LIKE! LOL.
oh yeah, and price. The price is very high. You forgot that one ;]
tip for keeping your heartrate where u want it on a bio-bioke: change gears. done. you're welcome. no reason at all to get a useless e-bike. get a motorcycle instead.
You absolutely should not keep your ebike charged. Only charge it the night before or the day of and even then, it's best if you don't charge it all the way. But nothing is worse for the battery than keeping it fully charged just sitting there. It's when all the wear happens on the battery. Anything above 4.0v per cell is damaging. It's also damaging, even more so than a full charge, to let the battery go fully dead. Ideally you should keep it between 80% and 20%. You will easily get 2-3 times the number of charge cycles (and that is counting the entire 100% per charge cycle. Iow, if you charged it to 75% and ran it down to 25 twice, that's one charge).
5:14 the increased trail damage concerns are due to the increased miles and greater frequency of rides per rider. Great video, thanks for sharing!
Mountain biking or just cruising in your neighborhood, being on a bike is much much better than being sedentary. And if an electric bike is what it takes to get you on the bike to begin with, you will naturally find yourself pushing yourself more and more over time. And the next thing you know you are healthier (whatever that means for you) and happier and more confident.
I've started to get quite interested in ebikes but I'm curious how it will change my riding. Even though I'm about 50 I'm still in good shape and used to be competitive road racer, I think I can still use it as a tool to get a solid workout. I think it could totally transform my riding by allowing me to repeat downhills or do more loops and basically get me out of the same old grind on my local trails. The other benefit I see is being able to get bigger, burlier parts that I would normally never want to carry around. 38 fork? Sure.. 170 travel? Yep.. coil rear shock? You got it. I love the idea of being able to use all of that tech and enjoy the benefits of the downhills without having to pedal a 50lb rig around.
Right now I ride one bike, a Canyon Spectral.. which is of course a compromise. I could see a world where I have a light short travel bike for "normal" riding days and a burly ebike for spicer days.
I also have AnkSpon and am getting into bikes for the first time in like 15 years here on Van Island. I would be extremely interested in a video covering any tips and tricks Beth has about getting (back) into biking from an accessibility perspective
If i feel crap i can still ride. Or I’ve over done it and need to get home easy.
That is they key
I bicycle tour, commute, shop.
I don't own an ebike. I'm 59.
And I ride, hike, and run. I rode up the Grand Ballon in Alsace 1367 meters. I was not trying, with my wife, to sweat and race. My legs were okay. Wife's, too. If we had ebikes we would have probably got adrenaline rushes, and raced up the hill.
It was doable. We didn't have to push our bikes. It was really fun. We were not out of breath.
If I hike up a steep mountain I feel my legs and I take it easy.
I notice quite a bit the mtbs wear and tear on trails. Even hikers in big boots wear down the trails. It's normal.
Ebikes are different than regular bikes. You have the extra weight which the battery has to carry. If I hike with a heavy backpack I need extra energy to carry the weight. The same as removing the battery as you mentioned.
I saw untrained ebikers push their bikes up hills. It is also a practice makes perfect.
You can become a good ebiker or a good regular biker. Your muscles and your cardiovascular system adapt.
I wonder what the supply of ebike batteries will be in five years. Already an ebike battery costs 600 -700 Euro, if it's good quality. The bikes are always getting better and more expensive and more powerful.
I am not an athlete. I never was. I take it easy. By the way. Diet plays an important part with arthritis, insulin resistance.
What a shame all these young men that are in perfect shape can't ride with real bikes anymore. It's like seeing a homeless 22 year old man in perfect health begging for money on the corner.
MTB E-bikes, super fun, super fitness, period! This crying about cheating? It happens any time tech changes, including when suspension came out, new frame materials, bigger wheels, lighter this or that, blah blah blah….I've been riding 40 years, been on ever type of bike made, nothing is better then the e-bikes we have now for fitness and fun….Stop racing everyone you see, comparing yourself, reacting to anything that is different then you! It's a real personal problem, nothing to do with equipment….
If ebikes 'chew through drivetrains' quickly and have fatter tyres than regular bikes…
… then ebikes are morphing into electric motorbikes.
I'm sure they are fun and it's great that they enable more people to enjoy trails. However for some of us who want to be fit, they seem pointless.

Hello, what is your experience with Superhuman bikes? I recently bought their Photon Pro Glow in the dark and I can say it's a big scam.
Eco mode whenever I climb. I love the intensity of the mountain. Just enough to keep heart rate between 135-150
I'm sure E-bikes are a blast, but I'm holding off for now. One concern I have is that where I live in Northern New Jersey, there are only so many long trails within reasonable driving distance. On my good ol' manual powered bike I'll do 20 to 24 miles in one trip…if I had an E-bike and could suddenly do several times that much, I'd get bored looking at the same scenery over and over. I also wonder what happens if something breaks and, instead of 12 miles from the car, I'm now 30 – and I need to use manual labor to get back to the car but my legs have turned to Jello from all that E-biking. So for now I'm sticking to people power. But I'm pushing seventy, so maybe in a few years I'll make the switch!
tnx for the vid bro. any tips on which bike to get for food deliveries with a lot of ups and downs ?!
Idk.. Why does it burn through tires faster if it doesn't do a little more damage to the trail?
It’s better then driving a car! 😂
Awesome insight. I rode MX for many years in my 20’s. Now just into drift cars. Butttt, my father wants to get into e mtbiking for local trail exploring in Pennsylvania. Now I’m convinced! I loved trail running for MX training. E MTB looks like the perfect blend of everything 😁😁
Trek powerfly 4 here, turbo mode everyday, doing 36 miles a day, love the 29 rims, but yearing for a 28 mph powerfly, for burst strength.
Discovered Bosh charging system after finished, needs to be unpluged, as it will start draining the battery if left plugged in overnight. Woke up to 92 % battery. Beating the snot out of the derailer.
In “turbo mode” to get to near still biking, you need to do massive gear reduction through shifting to give massive power, but at less than 2 mph to full stop. Then shifting back to full tourgh. It is a lot of shifting. .
At nearly 64 YO, I am sooo thankful for my ebike. Not because of physical ability as a senior athlete, rather, because after decades of sports wear and tear, my knees do not allow me to be on trail as much as I want. Further, where I live, there's a lot of climbing required. My heart rate was constantly in 170+ BPM. That is not as healthy as one would think! Constant zone 5 is unwise. Now I ride in zone 2, 3 and can spike into 4-5 throughout the ride – on purpose!
Last summer, I decided to take the dive and buy an E bike; with limited eyesight, and a limited community; a tandem ride was not possible. These bikes are fast. They’re fun and their exhilarating ultimately great respect and great patience must follow when writing.
I can’t wait for others, however I take my time when riding this bike. Fully loaded this thing is over 100 pounds and I would hate to go down with this bike. There is so much to learn about these machines that I find even eight months later I’m still learning new things about my bike.
With accessibility in mind, I choose my adventures carefully. Though I have limited eyesight, I’m not a careless rider however, many others walking and cycling can be. Safety first, something people don’t think of a lot went out here in Calgary on the roads or on the trails.
ebikes are a blast, Very fun to ride, a different experience, another way to ride and get outside, I find I ride more on my ebike!
My ebikes put the fun back into cycling! I doubt I would still be riding without having them. I still have to pedal but having the pedal assist brought the joy back to my cycling!
Great perspective. I haven't been mountain biking in years. Now, 30 years later, I have the itch again but, at 55 my body probably won't agree. I'm close to work and thinking an e-bike would be a great way to get back into it.
Former MXers from any era that now are cyclists will never dig an e bike.
I experience more exhaustion from my e-bike than my regular mountain bike. Basically I can go further faster and it’s more fun.
I just test rode a Specialized Turbo Tevo in Medium. Before that I have only rode walmart analog bikes. I want to get an E-Bike now but I'm feeling overwhelmed by all the options and trying to do parking lot "test rides" hasn't been the most productive. Any tips on trying to understand all the different brands and thousands of variations with in the brand and then the thousand more variations on each model?
Who cares what other people think. If having the help of electric motor makes bicycling more enjoyable to you then you should have an E bike. You don’t need to prove yourself to anybody. I don’t own a Ebike but it looks like a lot of fun. I have rheumatoid arthritis and riding a regular bike for long distances is just not in the cards. I think it gets people out of the house. Even if they don’t pedal it themselves at least they’re enjoying the outdoors.
Times when you can see you as a part of the whole universe and times when you must focus for life's sake on just this one part.
