Welcome to the Rochdale canal, a canal restored from the 70s to the early 2000s. It took The Rochdale Canal is in Northern England, between Manchester and Sowerby Bridge. Its name refers to the town of Rochdale through which it passes.
The Rochdale is a broad canal because its locks are wide enough to allow vessels of 14 feet (4.3 m) width. The canal runs for 32 miles (51 km) across the Pennines from the Bridgewater Canal at Castlefield Basin in Manchester to join the Calder and Hebble Navigation at Sowerby Bridge in West Yorkshire.
As built, the canal had 92 locks. Whilst the traditional lock numbering has been retained on all restored locks, and on the relocated locks, the canal now has 91. Locks 3 and 4 have been replaced with a single deep lock, Tuel Lane Lock, which is numbered 3/4.
What’s happening to restore the branch into the centre of Rochdale? I meet Steven John Parker of @stevenjohnparker6538 to discuss the options for the restoration of the branch back under the railways to the tram system of Rochdale

What a waste of a good canal ………! 😊
Been waiting for this one. What a lovely area…
That photo at 1:33 is in Littleborough, near Hollingworth lake and is actually at one end of the longest pound on the canal. Believe it or not the other end of that pound isn’t much further on than this canal arm, and is where the canal actually starts getting nice. I grew up in Smithybridge, and used to play around it, sometimes even in it when I was a kid. When they opened up all the culverts etc to make it navigable was fascinating. I’ll probably add to this comment when I get further into the video. I’m full of useless info about this canal.
"Rochdale Council". There in lies the problem, no vision, and little or no interest in the local heritage. Anyways, keep on keeping on with the restorative works and planning, winge and win.
Sounds like Rochdale Council need to get on board. They need to take a leaf out of Stroud Council with the development at Brimscombe Port
Absolutely love this video. You two with the positive attitude made this really enjoyable. Please please please can we keep tabs on this restoration! This is an incredible opportunity for people to bring back something for all to enjoy 😉
It has so so much potential, but relies on the local council having the foresight to see that. Do they? Will they?
