Neptune’s Staircase, located near Fort William in Scotland, is the longest staircase lock in Britain. Built by Thomas Telford between 1803 and 1822, this impressive engineering feat comprises eight locks that raise vessels by 64 feet (20 meters) over a quarter-mile stretch. Originally hand-powered, the system has since been converted to hydraulic operation, allowing boats to traverse the locks in approximately 90 minutes.

The surrounding area offers picturesque views and is part of the Great Glen Way, providing ample opportunities for walking and cycling. Visitors can enjoy watching boats navigate the locks and may even catch a glimpse of the Jacobite steam train passing nearby. The site is easily accessible, with a free car park and nearby amenities, including cafes and walking paths along the Caledonian Canal.
