First, there was Pidgey. Then later there was another pigeon Pokemon… but maybe they are based on different species? Maybe all the regional birds are based on different species! …no okay yeah they all are. But what are those species? and what other birds get thrown into the mix? They are called regional birds because they come first in every Pokédex.
They show up first in the Pokédex in every new region of every new generation.

Spearow/Fearow will always be regional birds in my heart, they’re 1000x better than the Pidgey line imo.
Also, Pidove’s line is my second favorite (behind Spearow’s). Pigeons are extremely underrated birds, we used to love and care for them as they used to be common pets like cats and dogs, until us humans decided to throw them out to the streets. Now they flock cities because humans are all they really know (for the ones in America at least). I adore pigeons, they’ve saved human lives and this is how we treat them </3
Little fun bird fact- the distinguishing difference between the Black-Capped and Carolina Chickadees are differences in their vocalization patterns. Their songs are unique to each species and prevent them from interbreeding. Basically female Carolina Chickadees will only respond to the song of a male Carolina Chickadee.

I would define it as "the common early route bird that is most emblematic of the region". so spearow and wingull are out because they're overshadowed by pidgey and taillow
personally, I don't count spearow as a regional bird because I feel it's harder to find in the wild compared to pidgey. like, besides the trade, pidgey has a higher spawn rate and more routes than spearow
