Despite the government’s efforts in making education accessible to every child in the country, a decent number of Gambian children still have to trek to school. For these children, it’s a struggle to reach school on daily basis as they have to set off from home early in the morning to work long distances to and from school. They trek under the baking sun and at times, on rough and dangerous terrains. They are also exposed to the elements of weather as they seek education in places far away from their homes.
These challenges seriously affect learning outcomes in numerous and various ways.
As part of their interventions to ease the transport challenges facing many school children, Caritas-Gambia and Rotary Ireland have brought into the country over 600 bicycles for distribution to 29 schools across all education regions. The bicycles were handed over to the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education in a ceremony held at Caritas Building in Kanifing on Tuesday.
