Professional cyclists competing in the Tour de France train a LOT. They ride their bikes and workout in the gym sometimes in excess of 30 hours a week, and then they focus on recovery and nutrition. We wanted to know whether it was possible to maintain the same training demands as a pro, whilst holding down a full time job, so Hank stepped up to tackle the training program with his regular 9-5 here at GCN.

Do you think you would be able to do this, whilst still having a healthy balance of enjoyment and life?
It's kind of a joke. Like thousands of people with no money, not fancy carbon fiber bikes and Rapha clothes, cycle tour. They are doing like 60 or more miles a day, hills, wind and camping. Also like 40kg weight in bags. That's the real deal, but it's not monterised with huge sponsorship deals. Posting bike ride times etc, seems really ego driven to me. Having said that I'm sure there are people who just like cycling, road cycling and get on with it.
What about doping?
The outcome was predictable, with too less recovery and no ergogenic substances. BUT NATURAL cycling can be a great way to be in a good shape for a lifetime, similar to natural bodybuilding. I personally transformed the methods of a miidle distance runner, that I once was, to a cycling schedule. That means five to eigt hours of workout per week, endurance rides up to 90 Minutes, fartleks, Intervals, sprints plus PT. It works good, I´m feeling strong with my 64 years of age, even tough I can´t run any more due to tissue problems, but I still can cycle and I learned to love cycling over the years. On the other hand, I´m not able to win any kind of race. It doesen´t bother me. In my humble opinion the bike is a tool to manage your life until it ends. Start with a road bike, ride it as many years as possible and finish with a folding race bike, if neccecary. Bikes are bio-tools, touched by no other tools or machinesin efficency and simplicity. This tool has to be used carefully and for a very long time, allmost every day. PT and athletics give the muscular backup for it. Last, but not least I´m not a native speaker. I´m German.I´m running a gym in Germany, compltely on my own and I never learned to drive a car. I´ve got no licence ever.
Best wishes to GCN. Your project is vital and an inspiration to everey cyclist. I´m loving your clips.
I work as an order selector from 1pm until 1am most days for 4 days out of the week sometimes 5 days a week and definitely find it super hard to train for my first century coming up October 1st. I know I would probably not be able to train like how this video explains working in the job I have especially with how physically demanding my job is as well. My life would be a lot easier if ppl weren’t crazy drivers I would ride right after work at 1am lol. But definitely for sure find it super difficult to train and be working
Great video super informative
I wake up at 5am every morning to train!!!! Really hard to work after that to be honest 🤣🤣🤣 but i love cycling – running!! A lot of discipline and love for sports.
Day 3 was hilarious… "Sorry coach I'm gonna go back to bed." 😄
A pro living like this 24/7 would eventually get used to it after 3-4 weeks. It's a struggle when you try this intermittently, but if its a constant routine, you get used to it.
Lance Armstrong doesn't even ride a bike for exercise despite saying he loves to workout and goes to the gym every day. "It takes too much time. If you do a hard run for an hour then you would have to ride for 3 hours" were his exact words.
Getting enough sleep is a huge part of training….. Getting up earlier just makes your training shitty
Please share a detailed program…
Hard to understand, e.g.
Include 4×15 min of sub ftp
What time between sets?
Or
4×10 min of 60s/30s…
60 sec + 30 sec = 1:30
You can’t make 10 min with 1:30…
How does splitting a 4+ hour session in two, say morning and evening, affect your training compared to a single long session? Now, how would it affect it to do the second session on a rest day? Same number of hours of training in a week.
i think its a bit easier if you work at home and can manage your work/training hours and sleep/recovery
Image a 12 hour shift.
Well you never get the rest time like a pro when you work full time
Why folks obsessed with so long distances. As ex runner you better off as recreational racer just training for a fast mile or 5k then 26.2 miles
Same with cycling. I don’t care about how fast I can cycle for over 40 miles. 10-25 miles only requires 2 hours training a day. Everyone should focus on how close you can average 25-30mph for over 10-20 miles ( flat little wind). With no peds Hill climbing is mostly genetics. Require first a Feather weight frame to be fastest.
Unless you are making millions why ride more them 2 hours a day.?!
If you are cycling 3-6 hours that’s waste.
16;18 😂😂man after my own heart
Can we get a detailed version of this program?
At 5:11 your very expensive watch says it’s 5 past 9am when you are claiming it’s 6am!?!? Hanky!?!? Are you trying to fool us? Naughty boy!!😂🤦🏼♂️
Surely if u rode to and from work then thats 4hrs straight away
