Mont Ventoux is 25 km north west of Sault, through a valley of lavender and wheat fields.Soaring 6,273 feet it is the highest mountain in the region and has been nicknamed the “Beast of Provence”. It is the scene of one of the most grueling climbs in the Tour de France bicycle race, which has ascended the mountain fifteen times since 1951 and has become a magnet for cyclists from around the world. The top of the mountain is bare limestone without vegetation or trees, which makes the mountain’s barren peak appear to be snow-capped all year round . Venteux means windy in French.
