«Spārīte» (which means in Latvian «Dragonfly») is one of the most famous kid’s bicycles of soviet times, that was produced in Riga and Daugavpils. Durable, easy to handle and… well… 8 kilos of weight made it perfect for “muscle work”.

Production of this tiny tricycles started in 1965 in Latvia – manufactured at «Sarkanā zvaigzne» bicycle factory in Riga. Every year thousands of Dragonflies were delivered not only to the soviet republics, but also abroad – export covered most part of Europe and even some exotic countries like Brazil and Yemen.

At the year of 1974 production of «Spārīte» was moved to Daugavpils Driving Chain Factory. Many tricycle models have been made here until the collapse of Soviet Union. Through the years bicycle had some moderate upgrades, but the main shape hasn’t changed for decades.

During the “Engineering Arsenal” grand opening as a symbol of new beginnings, a kid on «Spārīte» bicycle became the very first visitor of our center. Have you ever ridden one of these?

Observe these and more at the Daugavpils Center of Technics and Industrial design «Engineering arsenal»!
