Lecture by Dr. Georg Hochberg, Marburg at the Leopoldina Annual Assembly 2024 | 27.09.2024

What is the origin of life, what is life and is there life outside our universe? These are some of the most fundamental questions that humanity is dealing with. Discussions about where life begins, how it could have originated and whether it is an unlikely isolated case in the universe, or whether the emergence of life happens automatically like a law of nature if only the conditions are right, divide the scientific community. There are proponents of the coincidence concept and supporters of a deterministic model. Ultimately, these discourses also determine faith. The Annual Assembly theme “Origin and Beginning of Life” touches on almost all areas of science and, in addition to the fields of chemistry, biology and physics, also includes philosophy and the geosciences.
