The Tyne Cycle Tunnel work has finally been completed, eleven years since commencing, costing £10 million over the initial budget of £6 million.
The grade 2 listed tunnel upgrades included installing a Cycling lift at either end in the tunnel with an Incline platform lift, connecting Jarrow to Howden through the Cycling tunnel.
The journey only takes less than a minute to complete, and I can report it is a silky smooth ride throughout.
The new Incline platform lift at either end of the tunnel are each large enough to carry 21 people at once but this will vary hugely depending on the mix of cyclists and pedestrians.
Once down to tunnel level, pedestrians and cyclists use separate tunnels.
Just to confirm. The Tyne Cycle Tunnel is now open.
