My wife and I both have 1980s touring bicycles. The hubs have cup and cone ball bearings in them that I’ve remade myself with new bearings and park tools HPG-1 grease that is supposed to be used for bearing applications.
However, recently I noticed that the bearings (only on one side of the wheels) are leaking grease. It’s as if the grease has turned to liquid and is just running out of the hub.
I thought maybe it was just a fluke and I took the wheels apart and rebuilt them. When I did so I noticed the grease in the other side of the hub was just fine and still think but the runny side had basically liquified. After taking them apart and regreasing and putting them back together the same thing happened a month later.
Any ideas what is going on?
We did just move to Sweden and the temp here has been above and below freezing about every day but I the grease should be able to handle that. Also we cycle all the time now so the bikes are getting a lot more miles than they were previously.
