Day 258. 50km (83735kms 7yrs)

It’s my final bike day of the year! Using Will’s pump I re-inflated the slow-puncture afflicted front tyre one last time before setting out into a blustery Worcestershire morning.

Unlike yesterday, the ride today was up and down all day. Narrow country roads and leafy bike lanes led me to the outskirts of Worcester, whereupon I followed the canal towpath to the centre. Despite having lived nearby for 9 years, I don’t believe I’ve ever been into Worcester cathedral and what I thought would be just a quick spin around became a rather lengthier visit. I was surprised to learn (the infamously ‘bad’) King John is buried there, but also stumbled upon an interesting photo exhibition, explored the crypt, and marvelled at yet more stained glass.

But I was eager to get ‘home’ too; just 25kms now separated me from my childhood bedroom, and more hugs from my family. Every climb was now frustratingly tedious, slowing my approach. But I know this road well so it was also enjoyably familiar. Turning into Bewdley it was lovely to see once more the town’s familiar red brick and Tudor high street, and rather more startling to immediately run into an ex and his girlfriend 😆

And so this is me signing off for a couple of months; I’ll be cycling back down to London in January where – after Gibbo gets a full service – I’ll be ready to set off again for adventures new 🌍.
