In this episode, I connect with Patty Wiens, the Bicycle Mayor of Winnipeg, for an update on the everyday cycling scene in this emerging bicycle-friendly city in the province of Manitoba, Canada. We discuss the status of the lagging safe cycling infrastructure, the impressive advocacy groups, and a recent act of “civil obedience” where cyclists went out at rush hour and followed all the “rules of the road” to the letter of the law to demonstrate how silly it is to apply these motor vehicle laws to people riding bikes.

  1. Lo and behold, there WAS snow in The Netherlands this week. And it will be 17degrees in two days on Sunday. Snow, rain, wind, it doesn’t matter. You can bike in all climatical conditions.

  2. The focus on women’s leadership in cycling advocacy was so powerful. Patty, your work in bringing women into the cycling space and highlighting their contributions is incredibly impactful.

  3. When my sister moved to Bartlesville, Oklahoma, she was the only one in town riding her bike everywhere. During one major snowstorm, her coworkers knew she was on the way to work when the guy on the radio said, "The weather's bad out there. Nobody's going to be on the road. Except that crazy lady that just went by on a bicycle."

  4. Welcome to Canada 🇨🇦! Great talk. Winter cycling is fun, but it has its challenges. As Patty said, climate change is making it easier these days. Thank you for introducing us to Patty!
