This video will outline the roles and responsibilities of the learner biker as you learn to ride a motorcycle. As with learning to drive, learning to bike is not just about doing a test — it is about learning the skills and behaviour required to be a lifelong safe road-user. This video will outline the Initial Basic Training programme as well as explain how you can get your Category A licence through Direct Access or Progressive Access.

This video makes it easy to under stand the differents licences for motorcycles, and to how to go about doing IBT ,well done RSA.
Thanks for your comment William! We are glad you have found it useful.
This is an exellent series of videos,a must for anyone considering getting on a motorcycle.
A very good tutorial.
Well done to the RSA on a well thought out set of videos
These are really good videos. I have a question, and this may not be the place to ask but here goes. I am currently 30, I have had my provisional license since 2009. I am currently on my 2nd which is due to expire on the 29th of August 2013.
I have been told that I can exchange this for the new A unrestricted license and my previous experience will be taken into account so I can go ahead and apply to sit my test. Is this correct?
Thanks,
Jason.
Hi Jason, to renew your 3rd learner permit you will need to provide evidence that you have booked your driving test. You can book a driving test in the category A at any time once you have received your unrestricted A, you must have completed Initial Basic Training (IBT) in the 40 kW Bike before riding on the unrestricted bike and before presenting to driving test. You will also be required to present for test in a 40 kW bike. Please visit our website to apply for your test.
Excellent videos it has to be said, maybe more videos like this would be great too such as giving a complete run through of an actual driving test for a motorcycle or some more in-depth videos on IBT. I feel it would give an even better insight into motorcycling and allow people to decide if the right lifestyle for them.
If a person was to get a full licence for a category A1 licence and then progress to an A2, how does that person obtain their category A licence?,
Thank you.
Hi there, for an "A2" licence holder to get an "A" licence, if over age of 24, they can take out a learner permit in category A complete module 5 IBT and pass a driving test to obtain full driving licence. If under age 24, after holding A2 full licence for 2 years, apply for a learner permit in the category A, complete module 5 IBT and pass a driving test to obtain full driving licence.
Hello again, sorry for taking up your time, but to get it straight, if an A2 licence holder has a full licence for 2 years e.g. 19-21 can do module 5 and progress to a category A licence at 21 years of age, correct?
Hi there, you are correct. Though a 19-21 year old must pass a driving test to obtain full driving licence.
This is a great video and very informative. Found it very helpful in going about planning to obtain my motorcycle licence.
Can you advise me…. I have been riding motorcycles here in the US for the last 4 years. I started in 2010 by completing the Motorcycle Safety Foundation's Riders course in New Mexico(3 day course) and bought my first bike, a Suzuki GSX650F. After 1year and 7K+ miles I moved to Arizona and move onto a Honda CBR1000RR which I am still riding and have covered about 13Kmiles. I recently moved to Oregon and completed the Intermediate Rider Training 8 hrs course and Oregon Theory test. I will be moving back to Ireland next year and will be bringing my motorcycle with me – What advise would you give me on the course I will need to take so I can continue to ride my Honda in Ireland? Note: I am 43years old.
Hi I hold an A2 Provisional Licence for 16 months now and I am Doing the Practical driving test Tomorrow.I am Currently 23, I have completed IBT modules 1 to 4. To progress to a full A licence will I have to Wait 2 years and do Module 5 or when I turn 24 next year can I do module 5 and get an A provisional and the just progress to an A without resitting my full driving test.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I got the A2 via Direct access.
Do u have to have a moped as your first bike I was looking at a 125cc dirtbike wich can be used on the road. then was thinking of getting a 250cc – 600cc as next bike
So can I get any bike at 16 as long as it has 125cc?
So im 24 and i dont hold a bike licence but can i do my theory test then go straight for my A2 licence?
can i drive on the road after my theory is done, but before my IBT?
This might be stupid but what's the difference between a manual and automatic bike
do you need a licence in ireland to drive a moped ?
Wait so while u wait six months you can ride right?
The RSA really pimped out that moped .
if you hold a full a1 license for 2 years, can you then get a full a2 license without doing another driving test for the a2?
If you are trying to get a A1 learner permit and you complete the IBT, are you allowed to drive on the road in the 6 months between completing the IBT and sitting the practical test?
Why do I have to wait six months till I can acctually drive the motorcycle
Im a little confused. Im looking to do mine for category A1 as I need to be able to get around soon. So after passing your lessons and IBT you have to wait 6 months to actually be able to ride?
I am a little bit confused to be honest. I never had an AM or A1 category & I am 21 (over 18 years) So can I go straight to a Category A2 without having to have A1 or AM Cat? OR should I have AM Category and work my way up even though I am 21 years old?
What CC is A2? Another question, is the ibt course leading to an exam of what you learned?
Can I drive the smallest motorcycle up to 50cc with a driving license without additional test?
Can't you drive one when your 16?
I'd say it would sound better and more accurate if they said instead of "and you waited 6 months" something like "and you have practised on your learner permit for at least 6 months". Waited sound a bit like "ok you have done your A2 permit, now sit and wait 6 months….
what is that A1 Bike called
This works both ways, fine we get the training and pass the test and maybe get refresher training at some point later, but the government has a responsibility to. They should look at road design, maintain the roads better then they currently do, which from a bike user is practically non existent and have contractors remove loose chippings or better still, outlaw them, fine famers for spills ……
Hello RSA ,when you said A1 as in small motorcycles, what specifications do you mean upto how many cc and bhp
Do I have to learn gears if I'm going to ride stop and go electric?
Video 4? Where are videos 1 2 and 3?
Excellent
Restricting access to bikes based on your age is complete discrimination.
I'm not a biker, but if I was, I'd be fuming over this. Especially when experience and knowledge is something you gather quite quickly.
Your driving ability is what you should be judged on, not your age or gender.
So if I understand correctly, if I manage to do the necessary computer written test and driving modules, I can then ride a motocycle alone with L sign until I learn to drive and then after 6 months do a riding exam and if I pass I get my full license?
Hi, I got my A1 license when I was 17 and today I'm 30 years old. Last year I decided to upgrade my license with the intention of obtaining an A. I went to the ndls center and they said that I had to take the theory test and take the ibt. My next step is to take it for a test drive. Can I use a 1100cc 127hp 180kg motorcycle with the L plate daily and on the day of the test?
only have the option to apply for AM, and im 29
