Join me as we explore the new Trans Pennine Trail bridge at Staveley which is the former Great Central Railway and is now a part of the town deal project, the bridge was lifted in last week and it is already opened by the contractors O’Brien’s. We take a walk down to the old Midland Railway sidings at Bellhouse basin and look at the old girder bridge followed by the Archaeological dig being done by York Archaeology who have found the wharf, basin and the old walls and boats. It’s a fantastic time to see heritage that unfortunately needs to be buried again for the construction of the puddlebanks.

  1. The reason for walking horses across the bridge is because saddle height would be level(ish) with the railings. If the horse is spooked and rears up the rider could potentially be thrown over the railings!

    You're welcome!

  2. I wonder if they are going to preserve this site or remove the old walls, to reuse them elsewhere before it gets filled in? Cool findings though , especially the old boat hull..

  3. Very interesting video. Surprising that so much of the stonework in the basin is still intact and in relatively good condition – a consequence of being buried under accumulated layers of silt. Pity it has to be buried again to facilitate building of clay banks ahead. Will the restored basin replicate the original? Thank you.

  4. The cast iron pipe hanging over the basin wall along with the soil/silt being so oily, could that be because it was the condensate drain off from the gas works when it was making gas?
