Cycle Day 32: Görlitz (Germany) to Krompach (Czech Republic). 58km (667vm). Leaving Görlitz we cycled south following the Polish border along the river. Cycle route went along a huge recreational lake that has been created from an old brown coal mine. Some sizeable old ruins – assuming old mine admin buildings. Today was a little windy and cold so only a few cyclists, roller bladers and kite surfers out and about at the lake. Der Berzdorfer See covers 900 plus hectares. Cycle path took us through the middle of a monastery complex. Then a long stretch of forest and river. German border marker posts every 500metres or so. Emerging from the forest we came to a village where one business seemed to have the food & hotel business all sewn up. Shops on both sides of the road – hot German food, selection of meats and all sorts, coffee, beer. Opposite appeared to be a bar/hotel. Chef in the kitchen just leant out of the window and directed new arrivals to the bit that was open. Cyclists, labourers, police & postie – they all stopped there. Town/city of Zittau – part of the Görlitz district. Found the market square & had our picnic lunch outside the RatHaus. The RatHaus was flying the flags of the three countries that all touch nearby to the city. After Zittau we took a detour from our route to find the point at which 3 countries meet. Poland, Germany & Czech Republic all touch at one point. We had a field to ride across and a river to separate us. The Polish/Czech side of the river had a nice park area. Quite special to see this. Only accessible by bike or walking. We continued on in Germany. Reconnected with our route. Came across another vintage train outing – we caught it up. With 7 km to go we knew we had a serious spike to get over. First part of spike was a forest track – very steep, rocky and was definitely a walk job – even difficult to walk. Rolling through a couple of villages before the final spike up to the German/Czech border. Again, didn’t have the energy for the last bit of this climb. 13-15%. At the top – Czech Republic. Farewell Germany – it has been fun. Views of the Lusation Mountains which we need to cross tomorrow. Typical Czech Countryside unfolded before us. Back in beautiful Bohemia. Staying at a farm stay with a restaurant on the outskirts of Krompach – a tiny village.
Day 32 of 7 weeks cycling the 2400km from south coast to north coast in Europe and a little bit extra.
