In the past 15 years, rally bikes in the Dakar Rally have evolved significantly. Veteran racer Si Pavey notes that rally bikes have transitioned from heavy, fuel-laden machines to lighter, agile models with half the fuel capacity. Modern desert bikes now weigh about the same as the Suzuki DR-Z400 and carry only 25 liters of fuel, enhancing performance. The defining rally bike feature, the enclosed fairing, emerged in the mid-1980s, giving bikes their distinct “desert” look. Early rally bikes were modified trail bikes, a trend Pavey continued with his 2002 BMW F650GS, blending rally heritage with practicality.
