On a lovely Autumn day, I cycle north of York from Great Ouseburn over the Aldwark Toll Bridge (River Ouse / Ure) to Beningbrough Hall (National Trust), via Linton-on-Ouse and Newton-on-Ouse, then over the East Coast Mainline railway to Shipton-by-Beningbrough, then along lanes to Huby (including some off-road cycling), then Easingwold, Alne (including Alne Plague Cross) and Aldwark.

Perfect (if muddy!!) North Yorkshire English cycling in Autumn / the Fall – English villages in the Fall / Autumn. An easy-going, fairly flat North Yorkshire Cycle Route.

Interesting Brontë Country fact: Anne Brontë came to Little Ouseburn (adjacent to Great Ouseburn where I begin this bike ride) in 1840 when she was employed as a governess by the Robinson family of Thorp Green Hall, just outside Little Ouseburn.

Her brother Branwell Brontë joined her 3 years later to become the Robinson son’s tutor. Anne and Branwell remained there until 1845 when Branwell had apparently had an affair with Mrs Robinson. Anne and her brother left in a cloud of scandal. Branwell Brontë returned to their home village of Haworth a broken man, and drowned his sorrows with alcohol and opium.

This flat area of the Vale of York is very different from the hilly Pennine area of the Bronte’s Haworth.
