Cheating cyclist. Apparently that’s me in this UK crit race at Hillingdon Cycle Circuit. Not happy with a late race criterium attack I did, others cyclists went to the commissaire to check if what I did was cheating or not.

  1. I think that move was right and legal. Overall, your thinking through the race was excellent (like Chris Horner – master of tactics). Your avg power comparing to the winner was ……rather pathetic.

  2. Proper race on your part when racing one should always attempt to win or place as best as possible as Pre would say to give anything less then your best is to sacrifice the gift. cheers

  3. You did everything perfect…. Work hard on the cycle giving it al.. Thats what cycle is about if you are in a competition… Stand your ground let the cry babies do what they do… Cry and its cheating… 🙏🧙‍♂️

  4. If you'd chased Nick's attack from the peloton and got straight on his wheel and sat there it might be a different story, but you went straight over the top of him! If he wants to sit on then roll turns then there's nothing you can do about that. Some people are so pathetic.

  5. When i used to ride stuff like this races chainy's, the amount of riders who'd keep you back was pathetic all for their clubs interest or teams, instead of playing for a win.. they're pulling you and themselves down imo

  6. Think it's mainly about whether you're getting an advantage or not. When we race at Combe you know we're not allowed to jump onto the back of the E12 group. But there have often been times where we've been snarled up in the final lap because we've caught them back up and are then all sprinting together. I actually lost out on 2pts at Combe because it was deemed I came 5th (because it was a bunch sprint with the E12s as well) when actually I was the 3rd Cat 3 rider to finish. Swings and roundabouts. Win some. Lose some.

  7. Sorry, I don’t race, and this might sound stupid, but may I ask if you got third instead of second? Also, was there no second place on the podium?
Oh, and great video! very easy for outsider like me to understand the race!

  8. Ha, ha, ha, ha. What a lazy bunch of twats!!! As for me, you did all right. You headed for a win, not for some "racing deal". Great job, great video!

  9. After about 30 seconds I almost clicked away because I thought the title had been clickbait however I didn’t and I am glad I didn’t as I really enjoyed this

  10. Only just come across your channel, Michael and despite having never raced before (and at 43, having no intention of racing in the future! 🤣), I found this fascinating and really interesting to watch. Great video and an awesome insight in to the tactics and your thought processes.

Sounds like sour grapes from the other racers to me though, and you thoroughly deserved your podium place. Loved that your folks were there cheering you on, too. Hope to be doing the same for my boy in a good few years.

Congrats on the Cat 2 level up too. 👌🏼

  11. No issue – other than their sour grapes! It’s a race not a time trial so tucking in and drafting someone else in the same race is just fine. Okay he’s lapped you but he’s still in your race. Shame there wasn’t better information available to you during the race – are you sure you weren’t 2nd? Didn’t see anyone else on that podium! G

  12. why the distance between two rider are off so much 1.5kilometer between you and the first winner. i don't get it because you all race in the same place why they got more distance

  13. Congratulations on moving up! You did what you had to do, and it was a smart move.

I remember one race where we lapped a group of 4-6 riders at the beginning of the final lap. I was at the front of the peloton and unobtrusively weaseled my way through the lapped riders, calmly rolled out a gap on the other side, and pulled ahead to win solo. My teammates noticed it but the rest of the peloton didn't. After crossing the line, I went back to admire the sprint for 2nd (which they thought was 1st). I was hopeless at sprinting.

The day I "graduated" from cat 2 to cat 1 was memorable, one of those rare days when one can do no wrong. A cat1/2 race, I broke away at the start of lap 2 with a cat 1 guy, built a 1:15 lead, halfway through he wore out, fortunately a chase group of 5 caught of us, better yet including my mentor (who was fresh because he sat in given I was ahead). My mentor and I gradually whittled it down to 3, took turns attacking the 3rd guy, dropped him, then finished 1-2 (my mentor 1st of course). I got two gigantic trophies (2nd overall and 1st cat 2) and kisses from two Mexican-American beauty queens in traditional attire (the event was in LA, celebrating some Mexican holiday). Back to earth with a thud when I got home and my housemate exclaimed "YOU won THOSE???" Suddenly I was made a cat 1.

  14. Interesting. In the US you are not allowed to work with a rider who is lapping you. If they come through and draft through the field that's fine, but a single rider (like you in this case) is not allowed to go out and work with them. Apparently the rules are different in the UK. Good for you!
