  1. Richard Simmons once went on Leno in character as this really butch dude… he walked onstage I think after being announced with a fake name, with a fake mustache (I know mustaches can be a gay thing, but that wasn't what he was doing) and clothing very different than what he would usually wear, and a tough-guy/construction-worker Noo Yawk accent… he didn't come across as gay at all (unlike Bowen in this sketch, who still seemed gay (which is part of the joke of course)).

The Leno audience with Simmons was totally freaked out; no one was laughing. Then, after about a minute he went into his"Richard Simmons" character, with the whole effeminate thing, and the audience laughed with relief.

This was many years ago, probably in the 90s… after that I thought it would be cool if Simmons played a character in some independent movie, maybe a mobster or something, with that some tough-guy vibe… judging by that Leno appearance he could have been really convincing, and just amazed people.

Anyway, I look for that Leno clip here once in a blue moon, but I've never come across it.

  2. There's going to be a part 2 where it turns out Bowie is really gay, but is still too afraid to come out of the closet, so he tries to act more ' hetero' to cover it up.
( I know that's an age old cliche, but it's also a pretty real thing, still. )
