Running a cycling team isn’t cheap. You’ve probably seen from all our features that each team has an incredible number of vehicles and lots of highly specialised equipment. Not to mention top riders like Alberto Contador and Chris Froome, and the highly sought-after staff who support them.

Each cycling team has a different set of aims, and this is also reflected in their budget. Some teams, such as Tinkoff-Saxo have a rich backer, others, like Belkin, are run on a purely commercial basis.

In this video, we run through how and why the teams allocate their budget, and we think some of the expenses might surprise you.

  1. Interesting Simon says teams will purchase nutritional products if they do not get on with sponsors products, somewhat misleading if you thought your favourite Pro-cycling team won stages/GC's fuelled by a sponsors product only to find out it wasn't used by the team (some/all/one or two riders). I'm not surprised but also not something I was aware of until just now

  2. 'Teams have to buy extra bike stuff. It could be additional nutrition products…' HA! Quality line. Team might have to look elsewhere if they don't get on with their title EPO sponsor.

  3. So my question is, "What's in it for the team ownership group?" Does anyone (other than the riders and staff via their salaries) actually make any money?

  4. How many buses do most of the teams own? Also, when they go from Europe to the USA for something like the Tour of California, how do they transport the buses?

  5. I would like to see the teams racing around f1 tracks so on a given day there would be a fastest single effort on the home straight. Single lap time trial, Team Time trial and then an all out all teams racing for about 10 laps. points awarded for each area and overall winner of the day and team winner of the day

  6. Sponsorship in golf is similar in regards to kit some simply continue to use old clubs made to look like new sponsor . Cheating in a way as your fooled into buying one make of club to reflect your hero but he/she is actually playing with a totally different manufacturer. Same with drinks may say red bull on the outside but something totally different on the inside.

  8. Can you tell me a Internet source which write about the fact you say in the video about that the 20% budget is from race fees? I am doing a bachelor thesis about economics of cycling teams and I haven´t read anything about it.
