the first ever traffic lights were installed outside the Houses of Parliament in London on 10 December 1868 to control the increasing congestion there.
They exploded because of a gas leak , injuring the police officer operating the signal.
The system used contemporary railway signaling technology, with semaphore arms for daytime but because they used green or red gas lamps at night, and a gas leak caused the accident.
Fortunately, this incident led to improvements in traffic light design and safety.
Traffic lights as we know them today were first introduced in the UK with a one-day trial in Wolverhampton on 11 February 1928.
But still after their first installations, it was not an offence to disobey traffic signals until assent was given to the 1930 Road Traffic Act.
They were first permanently operated in Leeds, on 16 March 1928
in Scotland Edinburgh, Scotland on 19 March 1928.
And in the US in 1914 in cleveland, Ohio
