In this episode my son takes me on a hill fest in the South Downs and I tell why my trial of an alternative to the Garmin Varia – the Bryton Gardia 300L, saw me returning it for a refund.
You can skip to the Bryton segment at 22.45 if you wish

You can’t deny Johnathan is your son!👍🏴
I got a Garmin Varia radar in the Amazon Prime Day sale £119, and I am really pleased with it, I was surprised how far back it can detect vehicles if on a long straight section of road.
I use what I call the "Reverse LeMond" approach to deal with hills — it doesn't get any harder, you just go slower 😁
I take it you don’t like hills🤔🤣
Looks a lovely area to ride. This is why I person gave up club riding and riding with others in general, thought I always held them up, so ride alone or it’s just hubs & I now. Skeg ride, some of our local roads part en-route. Old Bolingbroke just up the road from us still has a telephone box with a phone in it!
Area round Lee-on-Solent is where I first started regular cycling preparing for my first 'long' ride – 40 miles in the New Forest using a bike I still have, that was over 30 years ago. Not sure what the bike is but it has flat bars, hub dynamo and Sturmey Archer 3 speed gears which I recall were a little be random! I also used to work in Alresford. Gret Video, thank you for reminding me where my challenges started.
You should have used the Ribble Roy 🙂
Chapeau to you riding with your son. My son started leaving me for dead when he was thirteen. He raced mountain bikes and was pretty successful. Today he prefers driving!
Before moving to France we lived not too far from Alresford. It's a lovely area but an expensive place to buy a house.
Much flatter if you head towards the New Forest but it gets busy.
Always nice for someone else to sort out the route, it takes all responsibility away.😀
I used to cycle to the Poole Sandbanks ferry and then cycle on to Corfe Castle. Forty or more years ago though.
I did this many times and thought nothing of it. I just wish I still had those legs today.
You mentioned a long night ride, was it the Dunwich Dynamo?
Thanks for sharing the ride.
Good video Roy thanks. Your second day brought back lots of memories as I used to have a boat in Gosport and you rode right past the marina. Lovely area with Hill Head, Lee on Solent, Stokes Bay, Gosport – happy days.
As a bit of a natural climber, I've been guilty of taking a people on what I consider a "flat route" only to have them wishing terrible things upon me halfway through 🤣. Although to be fair I've been promised a "hilly one" only to be bitterly disappointed more than a few times.
By pure happenstance, I've either owned or got to try all but the "Carback" including IGPsport and that unbranded one that goes for £40 ish on AliExpress, and although they all have their quirks the Gardia was the worst at the price point for the same reasons you had. Even the unbranded one, although lacking in range, did not suffer from nearly as many false positives. Currently, have the Magene and it's been pretty flawless.
He definitely needs a RwR jersey … southern branch
What a lovely film! New to your channel, but glad I found it. I've spent some time around New Alresford/Cheriton, so recognised a little of the area you were riding in.
I'm lucky enough to ride with my son and am always apologising for slowing him down. Never joined a club for that reason; don't want anyone to have to wait for me.
When you first caught up with the old tractor, it's wheels didn't appear to be moving! I know it's an optical illusion, but that sort of thing amuses me!
Is rhat a redshift handlebar?
