Montenegro Mountain Madeness, MMM 2024.My first ultra distance self-supported MTB race.
Amazing country to explore on a MTB, (in my case a decked out gravel bike with 55mm MTB tires and 30mm suspension) the route took us through the most spectacular mountain passes and national parks Montenegro has to offer of course riding through some of the toughest MTB terrain.
Too many things happened in these past 5 days to try to capture everything, suffice to say that riding at night tired in MTB terrain high up in the mountains was really risky, had a few crashes but fortunately nothing serious happened.
I got stomach issues the last couple of days which made riding through this terrain even tougher as I barely had any energy to deal with the climbs, so instead I ended up doing lots of hike-bike on most of the steep rocky ascents.
The last night of the race I stopped at a farm in the middle of nowhere asking for water and I was invited to spend the night when they saw how ill I was feeling… this experience has to be the highlight of the race, these humble people offered me food and shelter and did not want anything in return. Definitely the people in the mountains, no matter in which part of the world are simply the nicest and most hospitable.
