What was lodged in my tire was actually a valve stem cover thingy (pictured on left). How it got stuck like that, who knows.
To clear things up from previous post:

I bought the bike at Bass Pro, not a local shop.

It held air quite nicely and no signs of leaking. (As you can imagine, I had to pump em up at home since they were low on air already).

I already bought a replacement inner tube in the event this valve stem cover did puncture.

Brand is “Ascend”.
